Title: Info before buying a mk4 1.8T gti
Post by: rgd88 on 22 March 2010, 15:26
Hi,

I'm new to the site and looking to buy a mk4 1.8T gti soon. There are just a few things I would like to know before I go ahead with buying one...

I am looking at around the '1999' age, so the earlier mk4. Are there any known issues to look out for on these? I'm looking at about the 100k mile mark.

Also, I'd like to see as near to 200bhp as I can. Is there any sort of 'plug and play' flash device that can add a few extra bhp, or any other sort of recommended re-map to use? I've been having a browse on the site but I'm unfamiliar with all the terms and names used. Can anyone recommend an exhaust to add to this?

When did the AUG engine come in? Was that on all 1.8t gti's? What difference does it have from the standard one?

I think there are probably more questions I've got that I can't think of right now, if anyone could help me out on those I've mentioned above that would be great.

Cheers,

Rob

it will be an agu at that age to get it to 200 ish ul have to get a remap i wouldnt recommend any chips or other forms of mapping. usual thing to check really what its like on cold start, gearbox movement on cold starting, smoking, check oil filler cap to see if theres gasket leaks (will leave a yellowish deposit on underside of cap) pulls nice in every gear. depends how much your spending and on 100k miles if it has not had a major service expect to change bushes all round, brakes fluids etc all depends on how much ur paying hope this helps mate and welcome to the forum, the best golf gti forum around with the nicest peeps

Ah great, thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.  just what I was looking for!

I'm looking at £2500 as my budget, I'm selling an 04 plate st170 with lots of goodies and want a golf to replace it. Also need some money to use on a deposit for a house

Thanks again,

Rob

I had a £2.5k budget and was looking for a T but after looking at half a dozen thrashed/battered ones I gave up  Good luck to ya fella but be prepared to travel for the right one. Having said that I went all over the place on wild goose chases :undecided:

I paid 2250 for my 99 V plate with most bits done such as remap, lowered, wheels, tints, stuff like window regs, wiper motor etc had been changed.

I knocked this up when I was doing the ballache search for a cheap 1.8t, hopefully it may be of use to you for a quick checklist :)

if you can,I am not sure if it will fit but if you can get an ecu from america and fit that to the car.you will see 190bhp as over there they can like that
