My 84 gti (kjet) has developed a very tickety sound under acceleration. It isnt noticeable on idle.
I noticed it after starting it on friday. I am sure it wasnt bad before, so its as though it has happened over night. I changed the oil and filter on saturday (assuming it was old oil) and it hasnt changed anything.
is it likely my tappets have had it? Car has done 90k with no history of a change. Are these still available to buy new? couldnt find any on gsf, but i might be being a fool.
or is there something that could just go overnight to cause this?

Pinking?
If it's like my 84 gti then it has solid lifters rather than hydraulic, so they can be/have to be adjusted.

JUST remembered? I used expensive fuel on friday, when i normally use sh!t stuff. could this be making it make the different sound?

can you explain what this is? i cant find an idiots explanation on the internet. It does it in all gears, throughout the length of acceleration (until the engine noise drowns it out)
Is it bad for the car? how much damage can i do driving it about?

Using expensive fuel I assume you are talking optimax,usually stops pinking as these cars like to run on higher octane fuel so I wouldn't of thought this was causing it :smiley:

Were you running on 95octane fuel? And by expensive you mean 98octane?

Yeah, i probably am using the wrong name by saying "high octane."
but i normally buy the cheapest (which is think is 95?) then decided to try the other bp ultimate (not sure its real name) and now it sounds bad. I dont know whether to drive it out and try on the stuff i used to use, in case there is something wrong and its doing damage?

I can't see how it would do any damage unless your cars a diesel :grin:

Just get a mech to take the rocker off and check for any bits at the top end (i asume from not knowing petrol types you arent the most hands on guy :grin: ). Were there any bits of metal in the oil when you changed it? If theres nowt going on at the top, the only place it could ly is at the bottom.
Rattling under acceleration? I will just ignore that... And then my car shat itself

I'm not actually too dreadful.
i have changed the rocker cover gasket, so had the top off, done my coilovers, wheel bearings, and both fuel pumps.
bolting stuff on and off is easy ha.
just never paid attention to how the thing actualy works if that makes sense.

Ah ok, well get that rocker off and get the sump off... any little bits of metal and you have problems!

before you go unbolting things I'd go over the car with a fine-toothed comb and look for anything that is loose. Brackets, heat-shields etc...

For what it's worth, my 87 digifant sounded like a tin full of nails on super unleaded/optimax and much better on the regular cheap stuff. Seems to go against Reasty's post, but I'm guessing my engine couldn't advance/retard the timing to make the most of the slower burning fuel or something. I'm not too technical, so it's probably wrong!

I think its definitely engine related, it seems pretty consistent with the accelerator and i generally know my other rattles ha.

that puts my mind at ease a little!
I filled up with cheap stuff again today to try to flush the other stuff out, see if there is any progress.

I'd take it to a garage mate rather than try to describe an engine noise problem on here as you will never get a straight answer without us hearing the noise ourselves. Can you record the sound and post up on here? May help a bit. :smiley:

I think i am going through the expensive phase of mk2 ownership.

In my experience if its timing too far advanced it makes it hard to start when warm aswell as pinking.

Ive had a 1.6 driver thats had the same problem a put super unleaded in by accident sounded like a bag of spanners for a couple of days put unleaded in after that it sorted itself out thought this might help before you go to any garages

yeah cheers, i am going to try and flush it out, see if there is any progress before looking like a tool at a garage.

Funny cos thats the opposite of what should happen but I guess if its been run on 95 its whole life (which it deffo shouldn't of!!) then putting in 98 could be the problem.
My mate put 98 in his ped and it was worse then 95, random.
