Title: Tyres
Post by: jake on 21 March 2010, 18:35
Hi guys

Does anyone know good sites for track tyres? Does matter if road legal ones or not! Interested in slicks to be honest!

Black circles do Yokohoma048s and Toyo 888s - reasonable prices

Id be very wary of slicks unless you UBER experianced , they wont "give" like a normal road tyre they just break away with alot less warning

plus the exert an aweful lot more stress on suspension components and can increase oil surge

if you still determined , try good motorsport suppliers , of even manufacturers themselves

thank you very much for the advice mate!

Do dunlop do any decent ones? I have heard good and bad things about R888's, what are the Yokohoma048s like?

Thanks again

What have you heard about 888s , there are a couple of lads on here that run them with no worries ?

Yokhoma 048s ive read alot of good news about , the 750 MC stock hatch run them as their control tyre so cant be that bad

Dunlop do some Direzza 037 i think they are or 087 , much like the yokos and toys , limited tread pattern and different compounds

What car is it your running ?

i am saving up for some r888s jake. seem a good compromise between cost/longevity/performance. Other option i am cosidering is the dunlops dz03g (?). What wheels you running them on?
Are these for track use or for the shows?

Given the horrendous price rises in R888s you might want to consider the Kumho V70a track-day tyres.

For people running big power the R888s are thought to be a bit 'budget' for track use, but then you're putting a lot down to the ground so you're into Michelin Cup territory.

I really wouldn't bother with slicks for trackdays.

I did a back to back at Snetterton year before last and I did a 1:24.99 on slicks and a 1:26.6 on R888's so there was only 1.6 seconds in it.  And with the R888's you dont need two sets of wheels incase it rains, and you can drive there on them....and they are £90ish ea rather than £160ish ea.

If I was going to carry another set of tyres, I would actually invest in a set of race wet tyres because the difference between those and a road tyre in the wet would be enormous....on a wet day you would be running rings around everyone on road tyres.

I had a look around though, and for my R32 rims, which are an 18" wheel , they are nearly £160 a tyre

Is there anything good for track thats a little cheaper than that?

Would and 18" wheel be ok for track? Im only doing track days for a hobbie, but want to make sure its all done properly!

What's the minimum size of wheel you can fit to your car?

Now find a light wheel in that size that is appropriate for your car.

There's the size of wheel you should be running for track days.

Now find an appropriately-sized tyre, probably 40-50 profile in a track-day compound and tread pattern and put it on those rims.

Done.

Probably 16" rim in 7-8" wide, running something 205-220 width.

Really big wheels are just for poseurs.

I agree. I found the smallest diameter alloys that would fit over the brakes with a decent gap for cooling and then fitted stock width (R888's at 225 for the MKV) works VERY well.

Meh, the gap for cooliing's pretty immaterial, given that you've got wheels with gaps flying around all over the place.  So long as a fag paper will go between the caliper and the rim it'll be fine - a couple of generations back the M5 actually had wheels that worked like fans to push air past the brakes.  Always though that was particularly neat.

What is the smallest wheel size/offset that will fit the dated Golf5?

As a guide on weight, the Team Dynamics 15"x7" rims I run weigh 6.6kg each.

I've not tried 16's on mine, but I doubt that they'd fit given that the caliper gap to the inner wall looks less than 1/2". The offset could drop to 35 from 45, but then I'd guess the inner arch/ struts may become a worry.
On a stock GTI the calipers are fairly chunky and I doubt you'd get a 16" alloy on there, but it would be close.

Dated Golf 5

My 17" Team Dynamics come in at 8.2kg.

Debating on whether or not to get some OZ Alleggerita's at 17x 8 as they come in at 6.9kg each.

the problem i have is that i am running a 6pot porsche cayenne turbo brake set up on the front, so i cannot go any smaller than an 18" wheel!

Just out of interest would having a wider wheel on the rear help handling? For example a 9 or a 9.5j?

Thanks

Your car is probably over-braked and you're suffering from an overdose of vanity.

Take off the tart brakes and put something more sensibly-sized on.

Wider wheels on the back will make you look a proper charlie moron.

Jake did you decide on what tyres you are going for? Can you not squeeze 17s over those brakes?
I am now hunting around to see if I can find a set of 16s that will go over mine.
