That has nicer Alloys then the GTi.

The engine in that SHOULD of been put in the 6 GTi, rather then the Asthmatic K03

Everything about that is WIN WIN, except the price.

If they were same price R and GTi, i know which one alot more people would choose.

Asking price gets people on the defensive as to which is better.

Theres always next week lottery to pin my hopes

Hmm, not so sure on that one.
Quite happy with the quick spooling K03 myself. It maps to 260+bhp on stage 1, and is economical and refined without having the silly 3-4 year cambelt change ££££ hanging over you.
As for 'if they were the same price', well of course you'd go for the xenon equipped 4wd R!!!
Styling wise, I don't think there's much in it, neither cars are particularly pretty but both look purposeful and sporty without being OTT.
I'm happy with my hairdryer K03 equipped £21k GTI thanks.

Mind you if my 6 numbers did pop up next week........

Theres a few things i don't like about the golf R and why i won't own one.
1) The piano black trims/grill are not to my taste.
2) The black mirrors make it look like a base model!
3) the cloth seats white sections, not practical and
4) extra cost of ownership
5) centre exit exhaust stops it been practical for me. I trailer the mk1 & Riley elf sometimes, go buy engines, gearboxes, cars etc with trailers, Goto the tip with a trailer(not going to fill my 30K car i paid for with my money with garden crap/oil/car spares and poo).

Title: Re: Golf R in pictures

+ a smaller boot and much less comfort for back seat passangers than a Polo!

Smaller boot - fair enough...
but inside the cabin of the Golf R is the same as a Golf GTI - so why like a Polo??

ETTO though - I prefer the look of the Golf R, so I bought one!

I agree with Snoopys No.3 and No.4
The white bits on the seats aren't great, and it DOES cost too much!
Title: Re: Golf R in pictures
Post by: Snoopy on 21 March 2010, 12:09
Its was not actually the cost new i ment in 4 (as thats been talked about so much). Its servicing (heldex, cambelt, brakes), Insurance, future road tax, fuel, tires(4wd) etc etc.

The cost new part, I actually nearly cancelled my GTI a few time and i worked out how much extra an R would have cost me over what i was paying for the GTI it came to 10K (I had to have leather due to the Rs cloth seats!) So not small change but i did look at them as an option but im not a big heldex fan. I decided the scirocco R in blue from stock if i cancelled was what i was going to go for.

Did it feel lighter and more nimble due to been lighter than the golf?

Basically the Audi S3 unit. Similar to the SEAT Leon Cupra R, VW Scirocco R. Similar with a few slight differences to the mk5 Edition 30/Pirelli engine and SEAT Leon Cupra unit.

Bet you can't wait. I have the same power as the R (it's fantastic - and I used to own a 400hp e39 M5...), but I could really do with the 4WD

Errr.. that'll be the Roc R. Golf R is not available in Viper Green. Or is that what you meant?

Anyhow, saw a Viper Green Roc today and looked terrible IMHO. One of those colours that only looks good when it's immaculately clean and bright sunshine.

Up until I saw a rising blue one in the flesh at the stealers I thought they looked pretty bland for the money, which I appreciate is - to some extent - deliberate.

But in the flesh the R's have a lot of prescence.  In the pictures the wheels seem small but in they don't in person.  The extra few mill lowering really makes a difference ... all the small things add up and while it is a little understated compared to the GTI I think it actually has more presence.

Overpriced maybe.  Understated with more presence is not a contradiction.  A little dog meets a big dog, which one is doing all the barking and which one doesn't have to

I love white cars, I think that white R looks great too, I'm surprised I'm saying that.

Just one thing, I know that the interior is quality and I know how it feels and looks, but I think without the red stitching what comes with the GTI, well, it kinda looks like a normal interior now rather than something very smart and classy.

I'm just not sure about the look but it does look good in white  -  not sure about the blue colour a lot of people choose  -  I just think (and maybe it's because I've never had a Gti) that it looks like it's sporting some after-market kit, that the Gti is more the genuine article, that the R, from a distance, could be an 'ordinary' Golf  -  all that said, chances are that if I'd had a Gti Mark V, I'd have gone for the R (if I could have got my head around spending £35K on a Golf....which is doubtful). Anyway, you enjoy it, that's all that matters....

Why should Vw sell them any cheaper if people are obviously prepared to shell out for one.

If hes turned off his 4 wheel drive train bhp losses, dumps the 200 kilos its carrying extra, and has stage 2+ then it'll be close. Anything else it'll still be slower. (Except a track, or on the twisty stuff,or its raining again :embarassed:)

I'll give you my current feedback on the car, although it is always subject to change.

From a Golf perspective Ive owned in the past MKIV GTI and R32 and a  MKV GTI, but they were all sometime ago. Recent steeds have been a TTS and Cayman PDK. So I am used to the engine and also dual clutch gearboxes.

I have a mixed view on the car with probably the negatives outweighing the positives.

Positives

Looks great IMHO, I love the interior and its certainly better than my £40k+ Porsche was and in the same league as the TTS. Feels solid and well built. Its a little bit Q car, but everyone that likes cars doesnt have problems spotting it - especially kids (hopefully not thiefs). The ride on 19's isnt bad without the ACC. Had ACC on the TTS and never really used it. After a long day at work it a great place to be and can provide a nice relaxing drive home with the backup of 4wd in the wet etc. No traction issues here  The engine power wise is a jem and can obviously be upgraded easily and with 4wd you can deploy the power still whatever the conditions.

Negatives

Obviously the price. That goes without saying.
The lock on the car is poor, but that a small negative. You do feel the weight of the car especially at low speeds and through the steering  wheel. This seems to disappear at higher speeds, but around town you know it not light. Due the highly padded seats you cant feel the car through your arse and have to rely on the wheel, which isn’t like all VW’s blessed with stunning feedback. Dont know if the MK6 GTI is any better?
My major criticism is the DSG box in Auto mode. In D it is a dog it you are trying to make steady progress. Its fine crawling along or when pushing on, but if you want to go from A to B without attracting Plods attention and not being a Sunday driver its very unresponsive.  I think the issue is that with the bigger turbo the car is often out of the powerband.  S mode isn’t the answer as it then holds onto the gears for an eternity and will NEVER get into 6th on UK roads. VW needs urgently to meet up with their counterparts at Porsche to show how it should be done. Took the sales manager out in my car yesterday and he had to agree with me on the responsiveness of D mode just driving on a motorway. If you move to manual mode the car is fine and feels more responsive at the same speeds and gear on the motorway, its almost as if in Auto mode and any throttle depression it sits back, has a sip of tea and then decides what to do.  I have had the gearbox checked out and it reports back fine!!
The induction noise isn’t the greatest and Audi know how to make this engine sound without being tiring.
At the moment the summary in the Times is reasonably spot on for me.
Unfortunately, it’s also a touch boring, expensive and pointless. It isn’t playful and generally isn’t fun. The four-wheel drive makes this car about speed rather than driving, and going fast isn’t always the point. You admire it, appreciate it, acknowledge the brilliance, but never love it.
Saying all of this I dont know what I would change it to. Another TTS is about it. It is damn quick and in the wet stunning. Found myself going 20mph faster than I thought I was, so points might be an issue.

Great Review Chins.

Its good to hear from an owners perspective rather then asumptions.
Not Good hearing your finding lots of negatives so far. But perhaps she'll get better once its run in.

I have to say, having the k04 and dsg, the edition 30 doesnt suffer as bad  by the sound of it.

Wonder if theyve altered the gearing Ratio's??

Good review but slightly strange seeing as someone previously said that the low down torque matches that of the 3.2....  :undecided:

Look like BMW are the only ones still offering a big engine in a hatch back, but with out the awd  choices choices choices

Can't agree with your observations Exonian; my GTI looks superb all round and the 18" Monza's look the business, can't agree that the wheels on the R look better [Matter of personal taste of course] You may also be wrong in assuming that most people would go for the R if the prices were similar. Opinions please?
