Title: Park Assist...
Post by: p3eps on 20 March 2010, 20:35
I've got a loan car from VW just now until my Golf R arrives (hopefully in the next 2 weeks  )
The car is a '59 Golf Plus, and whilst driving home tonight I realised it had Park Assist.

I took a detour via a street full of parked cars to give it a test and it worked an absolute treat!  It was the weirdest sensation ever with the steering wheel turning itself - but it got into a fairly small space and pretty close to the kerb.

Can anyone tell me what parts make up Park Assist?  I've ordered the front / rear parking sensors, but Park Assist wasn't an option on the UK Golf R, despite being standard on the German one.  If it was a cheap retrofit then I'd do it for the comedy factor!  A good gimmick to show your friends!

Cool gadget.

A bit tooo new tech for me, what happens with the insurance if it has a 'malfunction'?

Very impressive when it does work though.

Park assist cars have a different bumper with a extra sensor nearer the front wheel and different wing mirrors (again for the senor I believe), so it's not going to be a cheap retro fit IMHO.

The only two options my car doesn't have is park assist and TPMS, so considered this retro fit myself until I saw some of the parts differences on ETKA

nothing happens. you still have to operate the throttle, brakes, gears and common sense!

cheers

When the Golf first came out with it, I read a few reports of the car kerbing the alloys while using park assist. Wonder who would be liable there?

I have used it twice and it was perfectly aligned and left a good distance between the kerb and the wheels/tyres. Having said that, i still am not too comfortable using it. :undecided:

if you let the car hit the kerbs then its operator error. At the end of the day its a parking 'assist' not a driver replacement and common sense needs to be applied !

Does it align itself with the cars in front and behind?

What I was reading, was suggesting it aligns with the cars in front and behind so if they are hard against the kerb then the Golf will also park hard against the kerb, hence the kerbing.

i did not check but it would have been difficult to align if the cars at the fornt and back are not aligned.  It does seem to detect the kerbs, though.  And like I wrote in my earlier post, the car was aligned with the kerb.  Must try this one more time with poorly aligned cars just to be sure.

When i tried it out it did seem to want quite a large gap to get into. Maybe they have made it better since.

Ah well... if its an expensive retro fit then I'll definately give it a miss.
I had hoped that it would use my current sensors and just need a module and some coding or something.
I'd probably only use it a handful of times... so I'll maybe just play with the demo one in the next week or two until I get bored of it
