Title: Brake problem

My brake pedal goes down 2/3 of the way before it does anything, could this be air in the brake lines/ checked the fluid and that looked a little low  too, could that be a cause too?  :shocked:

Id suspect a leak. Fluid out and air in. Go round and check all the connections, hoses to calipers etc.

UPDATE: Brakes slow me slightly very slightly when i press the pedal and until i get 2/3rds the way down thats all they do, no extra force. When I get the pedal down far enough they work ok...

Topped up fluid and its made no difference... HELLLLP !  :cry:

There'll be air in the system so they'll need to be bled. You'll need to fix whatever caused the air to get in, in the first place.

master cylinder seals might be shot

is yours 8V (239mm Brakes?) My 8v was terrible

the 16V stops on a six pence

As above.

Spongey is water/air in the lines.
Unresponsive or lots of travel is usually master cylinder.

right... GSF have 2 Master Cylinders available, the GSF budget one and one manufactured by a German company...

GSF - circa £35
German - circa £55

Which one would you recommend I go for?

Update: it appears that the brake pedal has a lot less play if I pump the brakes before I use them so I v much doubt it's a leak, does this narrow the possibilities down guys? Please help!

They is full of air. Thats why pumping them first makes them work. When you bleed them your going to be pumping it the same to get the air out.

Well, i'm not too sure, I had the car lowlovers in October (end of) and the guy who did it for me didnt adjust the brake bias valve so I spun it on a dual carrage way... Any how it has been off the road since until 2 weeks ago and I adjusted the valve last week.... and its since I did the valve...

I topped the fluid up and its still topped up so it cant be a leak...

You sure it's adjusted correctly?
Bleed the whole system and put some decent fluid in.

My 8v has always been like this since i had it.  I've put on goodrich hoses, a new master cylinder and changed the seals in the front calipers but that hasn't made a difference.  Obviously all the brake fluid was renewed. Just thought it was mk2 golfs to be honest.  Sounds like it isn't! :smiley:

Nope its only recently this has happened to be honest... although from what you've said i am a little concerned....! :cry:
