That must be hurting you or you are pissed off with the car.
Your in a fortunate position of the Golf GTI not meeting demand ,I mean a lot of us are waiting and waiting.
Have you tried the VW dealers. Play you cards right and I'm sure you wont lose a lot.
-
don't get me wrong as it's a great car. I drive it steady with the odd blast and getting 38mpg... but it's just not doing it for me. (i know i'll get a slating for the comment)
I nearly bought a Boxster instead, but decided against due to running costs that come with a 2yr+ Porsche. Now thinking i should have gone for it
-
Sad times mate I am sure you wont have a problem selling it though.
-
Get it mapped mate, guarantee you will keep it!

Porsche, totally understand Porsche is on another level.
Don't agree with Evo, as I wrote as things stand today VW are not keeping up with demand so you should get a good price. Of course not more than you paid for it. Good luck.
I few year ago I bought an Audi A3 sport and thought it was ok. When I put it in for a service and was given an A4 I was completely shocked. It felt what I thought an Audi should feel like. After that I did not like the A3
-
Woops miss read Evo's post. Apologies :embarassed:
-
I would phone a few of your local dealers and get some bids off them. We would like to buy it at Cheltenham VW but are full to the brim with used stock at the moment.

I had a Boxster for three years before my mk6 gti and although I've only had it a couple of days and have a slight issue at the moment, i would say the gti is much more fun. Of course mine is a DSg and has a fantastic turn of pace. I know that on paper the boxster is quicker( 6.1secs-0-60 ) but i would say the GTI DSG is quicker more fun, easier to drive, much more practical and much cheeper to run.IE: £600 plus for services etc for the boxster. As a boxster owner for 3 years it semed to impress other people more than myself. Yet the GTI impresses me so much. Its one of those cars that you always have a last glance at when you've parked it up. If you must have one, what about a Cayman. A much prettier car and finances allow it has to be an "S".
-
@Devito
Thanks for your feedback.
"Its one of those cars that you always have a last glance at when you've parked it up" - I thought it was just me who does that!
I've been lucky to borrow a Cayman S for a long weekend. I can honestly say that when i sat in it, i just thought - this is me.. Driving position, everything, perfect. But at 50k (it was only a couple of months old), i had to put the memories deep into the back of my head. I was balled over by it, the driving experience was fantastic!
I haven't driven or been in a Boxster. I'm assuming I'll get similar driving experience as the Cayman but with less power. I'd be happy with that.
Any suggestions as to what i should be looking for on a 2yr(ish) old one?

What dont you like about your GTI?
-

I know exactly what you mean: the stock GTI just isn't powerful enough. I wouldn't go as far as to say I was disappointed with mine when it arrived last August, but I had it remapped after just 2 months and it's a completely different car now. I had also considered a Cayman, but I honestly think a remapped GTI is the better (more all-round) car.
A remap costs about £400-500, so a lot less than you're going to lose by selling.

You have probably been asked this a thousand times. What happens if your car develops a fault warranty wise and has your fuel mpg dropped ?
-
@Steve30. This isn't going to turn into another oil burner battle?!
There's nothing wrong with it. It's a Golf. It's a GTI. It's good. But that's it.
Maybe this helps to place into context.... If someone had asked me about my previous cars:
02 plate TypeR. Owned from new. I'd respond with - Awesome to drive. I used to love driving it. I can still remember the good times now
My 55 plate 140 GT diesel. I'd respond wth - It's a golf. very economical when driving steady. cheap car to run. served a purpose when i couldn't afford to dish out on tyres every 9k miles
That make sense? i find it difficult to get overly excited about it. Or maybe the reason is that i've had 6 months of driving it in sh!tty conditions and in the dark...
-
Get it mapped mate, guarantee you will keep it!
Sadly, no matter how much power it has, it'll never drive like a Boxster...no matter how much money you throw at it.
If it's not lighting your ring, and the Boxster is...get a Boxster.
-
In fact...you've already mentioned it - get a Cayman.
You can pick one up reasonable...and in S form, it's sublime.
Just about practical enough to live with everyday too, if you avoid Aerokitted ones.
The GTI is great at being a Golf.
But it'll never tick boxes a Cayman/Boxster/911 can.
No matter how good a FWD Golf is...it will never give you the feeling a Cayman/Boxster/911 will when you get above 8/10ths.
People assume you buy a Porsche to go fast. A modified Mk4 Golf will be faster in a straight line than most Porsche this side of a GT3/911 turbo...but that's not why you buy one. Find a back road, turn the stereo off, get into the groove and start to push the chassis and brakes...and at the point a Golf runs out of ideas, the Porsche steps up a gear.
If that's the itch you have, buy a good one with a warranty, and enjoy it. Get it out of your system. You'll not regret it.
I would advise you budget for a decent warranty though - preferable OPC. Not cheap at £1100+ PA...but bumper to bumper peace of mind.
-

My dealer knows I've had a remap and said it doesn't matter. If anything really serious happened, I'd probably contact Revo and ask them to put the original map back (they keep this on file) before I showed it to VW.
and has your fuel mpg dropped ?
Yes, I only get about 28 now, but this is probably also because I use the 275hp quite a bit

If it was me , i would go for the RS4 over the Cayman, the Cayman looks very nice motor but RS4 is more sublime!! I had the Type R 53 plate brilliant car but very tiring to drive in long journeys!! No its not going to be a GTD then?

Have you driven an RS4?
They are a big old bus. Fast...but not exactly subtle...huge grip, epic engine...but just so big and heavy.
Very different to a Cayman where you can throw it about with the flick of the wrists.
I loved driving an RS4...but didn't come away wanting to own one.

It's all relative, I suppose. My GTI gives me the same excitement I felt about 25 years ago when I first got to drive a Mk1. It only had 110hp, but at the time I was driving a 0.9 litre Mk1 Polo with 42hp
-
Your memory has faded.  The mk1 is so much lighter(similar weight to a lotus elise  840Kg) and so much more direct and has far more steering feel, its like a gocart compared to the quiet detached bloated heavy mk5 and 6. I find it much more fun to drive as your so much more connected (you don't have to be going fast to have fun) but tiring over a long trip.
-
You're probably right. That's why I am currently scouring the country (France) for a decent Mk 1 GTI to restore
-
in order to prolong the thread....
i've driven the new S4 - fantastic car for the money. But M3, RS4, S4.. are a different type of car to the Cayman S, well i suppose you could say similiar to the GTI. Besides i ain't got any family so don't need the seats.
Having said that, was in the beamer garage the other day - > M3 Alpine (white)... looked the biz, very impressive piece of kit.
i only want to spend 23k(ish), was thinking boxster as not sure what cayman you'd get for that money...

You might able to get a low spec S privately. I think the non-s is too slow. Sport chrono and sports exhaust is a definite must if you want a better driving experience. Avoid tiptronics and strange colour. If the car is on 19s, you will need PASM cause the ride is quite hard.
You will not regret buying this car! GT3 is the only other Porsche that can beat the driving experience!
-

I'm not sure I agree there...
I prefer the drive of a 996/997 to a Cayman - the Cayman is so good it's almost perfect, and easy to drive to your limit
The 911 isn't...it does odd things that take learning, which makes it much more effort and to me, a more involving drive.
£23k buys you some nice 996 metal too...if you can live with the interior!
Hell, at £23k you are heading into C4S territory...and I know which I'd rather have.
-
just been to the gym, and decided that i'm off to the porsche dealership tomorrow to get clued up on prices, warranty etc. sorry fellas!

I do find my current Gen 2 997C2S very different animal to my prev. 2006 Cayman S. The Cayman S is more direct and alive than a 911. In other words, a bit more of a sportscar than a Carrera. It is actually more tail happy as well. The current 911 'FEEL' a little bit more layback!
Let's not kid ourself, its all down to what you fancy by the end of the day, you will never get near the grip limit of the 295/30 tyres on a normal road unless you want to go to jail! I spent a little more on a new 911 rather than saving a few thousands quid on a Gen 2 Cayman S cause I always wanted one since I was a kid. It's nice to realise your dream.
Hopefully, my next dream car Im buying will be one which starts with F4**

I wouldn't swap my GTI for a posh Porsche in a million years.

Dont think you'll get a caymen for that sort of money Disco, me old cocker. Listen ,drive a DSG b4 making your mind up. Your's is manual is'nt it? I could'nt stretch to a caymen when i bought my boxster cos they'd only be out for about 6 months at the time. My boxster was 11 months old with 3000 miles on the clock so i had quite a bit of waranty and hardly any wear and tear and cost 37K in 2006 from a main dealer. It was on a PCP over 4 yrs @ 319/mth with 12K deposit. frightening.
-
I sold my 2 year old Cayman S (9000miles on the odo) privately in november 2008 for just £24500. Almost £24000 depreciation!
If you are a second hand car buyer with cash to burn a hole in your pocket, you want the recession to come back!
Prices for good low mileage sportscar will continuse to rise as summer approaches!
-
With your budget you'll be looking at 2006 3.2s at indi dealers or a 2.7 at an OPC. The 2.7 is a nice enough car with 245bhp but the 5 speed box is a bit long legged and you need to work it a bit. The 3.2s has more torque and a six speed box so more rounded. Only look at my06 cars onwards as these have the modified ims bearing and are less likely to blow the engine , 6k fir a rebuild, 11k for a new engine from Porsche and don't expect any goodwill. Hence why for complete peace ofmind you need a warranty!
What you get is a sublime driving experience, perfect steering feel and accuracy, superb chassis balance and grip. Hugely practical with front and rear boots although not much use for trips to the refuse dump or Ikea!
Like all cars they have their issues - read the first 50 posts on a forum like boxa.net and you'll know most of them. Brake discs rust easily, rms leaks, air con condensors, battery failures, coil packs. Forget their sat nav, updates are £400 a pop, the system is outdated and a £100 tomtom is far far better. Full leather is nice, auto air con worthwhile, Bose hifi, heated seats. 18" wheels best fir ride andhsndlingbut everyone wants 19s - ride a bit firm. Pasm improves thingsbut dampers are £450 a corner.
If you are prepared to buy privately then you should be able to find a 2007. 3.4s in budget.
-
Thanks for that. appreciated.
i'm booked in to look at yellow 07 plate 2.7 this aft. although i don't think i'll be tempted for yellow. It'll be interesting to see how the 2.7 engine performs plus with 5 speed box - i'll report back this eve. I might be surprised and stick with the Golf :smug: doesn't help that its chuffin raining today!
i've had a look around and might be able to squeeze a 2.7 on a 07/08 plate for the budget with low mileage.
i've just checked autotrader and 6 month GTI's are going for new list price, if not more! crazy!

Mmmmmm...gotta disagree on that one....Got my RS4 and never looked back..traded My MK5 GTI for a MK5 R32...then got the RS4...Love it to bits...The Cayman comes across as a bit "gay" for me...thats why i like my "macho" RS4!!! LOL...

make sure you get over 5500rpm on the test drive because that's where the variocam kicks in, the exhaust note changes and the grin gets bigger.
Re the GTI. What people ask and what they sell for are a world apart. If you bought before all the price rises and vat rise then you might get away with a £2k loss. People with £20k to spend tend to like the security of a dealer and the finance they can offer. Porsche dealers will only sell your car on in the trade and with the recent plate change most VW dealers will be overstocked already and offer low prices, even though they'll retail at a very good margin.
Good luck hope you enjoy the test drive.

I agree...the 997 is less like a 911 than any 911 before it.
I couldn't bring myself to buy one over a 996, which although tamed still did the odd things a 911 should do.
The Cayman is far more predictable and 'normal'...but maybe a little too normal (next to a 911) to be as interesting?
-
I don't like Mr J clarkson but when he came out with the coment that went something like you only buy a cockster because you cannot afford a 911 i think he hit the nail on the head.

I sold my immaculate 996 C4S (loaded with lots of options) back in September with 16000 miles on it and was on the receiving end of £50k in depreciation.
Then there were the running costs on top of that...
Whoever bought it ended up with a sublime car...but one I had just come to the end of wanting to own, having finally had enough of it haemorrhaging money out of my bank account.
Would I do it all again if I was in the same position?
Hell yeah...
It was the best motoring time of my life and what price the memories of v-maxxing a 911 in germany or lapping the 'ring in a 911?
If it's an itch you need to scratch...get it done.
You'll love it.

Lets be honest here...how many prospective Cayman/911 buyers think "hang on, I may need to move a wardrobe or 5 people with luggage...I had better buy an RS4"?
If you want a proper sportscar to learn, and understand...you don't buy an RS4.
If you want an RS4, then a 2 seat or 2+2 sportscar just isn't going to cut it.
Different strokes for different folks.

I wouldn't buy a Speed Yellow Boxster either...it just doersn't suit the car in my view. And that's from someone who bought a Speed Yellow C4S!
I'll hazard a guess you'll come away dissapointed with the 2.7 5 speed Boxster.
Great chassis...but just not enough oomph to make it really interesting.
Try to blag a spin in a 3.4 Cayman...that's a whole different game!
-
well test drive complete...
Firstly, the 2.7 engine.... Yes there is a big dfference between the 3.4, however, it's quick enough. Plus sounds fantastic. When i got back in the GTI, it did seem rather sedate in comparison. Different cars tho', so can't really compare.
Chassis - very good. The salesman seemed to think that he needed to thrash the car and get it stepping out on roundabouts in order to sell to me.... Honestly, even if i wanted the car that i test drove i wouldn't have bought it for that reason! p!llock!
Colour -
The most impressive thing about the experience today was the standard of the approved cars they churn out. There was a 2003 boxter and a 911 in the showroom, and there wasn't a mark on them. prestine condition. Plus come with a warranty that's the same as you get with a new car. In my opinion (no experience of buyng 2nd hand cars), it's worth the extra a couple of thousand you pay to buy one from an OPC.
Will i get one? Depends on what they offer for trade in (gettng back to me on monday). I might have a punt at private sell. But i'm not prepared to lose a chunk of money in order to get one. I'll just wait a couple of years, and save more pennies for a Cayman

You get beds, a cooker, shower, toilet, TV, fridge, a tremendous driving position and more fun than the little push me pull you cheapster can ever hope to give.
