i thought i would have a go at refurbing my rs8 polished rims so i sanded the lacque down and got all the kerb marks out now how do i get it to shine again, originally these where diamond cut but is there any way i can get these to shine myself
-
you can do what I did and polish them by hand up to 2000 and they will look like a mirror...
Only problem you have is you won't be able to seal them with lacquer as it won't stick
What I've done with my Monza reps is to sand them back to get them looking good again but then gone to 500 so lacquer will stick
The diamond cutting leaves like a ribbed effect which is why they lacquer sticks... I've sanded all of this away too

have you lacqued the wheel yet
where i have rubbed it down it has gone all misty if you know what i mean how can i get rid of that do i have to polish it with anything or just rub it down
did you do it by hand and which way did you rub e.g up and down the spokes or across the spokes
and how long did it take you

I started with 180, then 320 then 500.
I've tried to keep sanding so it kinda looks like the diamond cutting pattern (you can just about see it in the pic)
I think you need to take it right back with 180 as it sounds like not all the lacquer has gone. I'll warn you it took me a while lol
Not lacquered the wheel yet as I want to get the tyre on there first then pop it past the beads once sealed
-
well im going to give it a go the weekend will try and get a few pics up
-
how comes the lacquer wont stick if you go anymore than 500 have you tried to get the lacquer to stick ??
-
paint or lacquer generally won't stick to smooth surfaces as it will bead, mush like water does on a shiny surface
I'm no painter but I've always used that as a rule
-
On the polished part i start with 180 240 400 then red scotch brite and then use a semi mat laquer to finish they still have a nice shine and with it being semi matt it hides the scratches. Also you can buy a self etching laquer for full mirror polised wheels from a company called Bradleys.
