Title: Poxy bloody weather (and a wiring Q)

Hi

I have spent the last 2 days in my shed, stripping old rear calipers, stub axels and carriers down, fitting a new seal kit, and re-painting everything for the big fit tomorrow :nerd:.  I have a new set of rear discs, pads and scirocco handbrake cables.  The shed doors have been open, radio playing softly in the background, tea and coffee flowing freely, lovely warm weather :cool:.  Now the weather has changed and it's going to fu*king rain tomorrow :angry:.  Basta*d :evil:.  I was going to put all my lovely hard work onto my pride and joy  I even have some posh new SPAX suspension for it, with twiddly knobs.  I have even put the battery on charge, to see if it'll start for the first time in 6 months.


Any way, reason for the post;

MK1 16V KR conversion,

I know there are loads of threads on FAQ'S, but...

Is it worth putting the whole 16v loom in, or better to splice whats needed in?  (I will be using the Dashboard and indicator stalks, only so I can have MFA and a 8k rev counter :grin:)

If you have a blade fusebox and pre 90 spec 16v loom they plug and play.....

not quite as simple as that though, the fusebox is on the opposite side of the car in a MK2 so some of the wiring lengths are wrong.  what I did was unwrap both looms and kept all the MK1 sensor wiring, and just swap over the 16v managment bits.
I only had to extend 3 or 4 wires, these went to the throttle switch and the over-run cutoff valve.  Mine had the blade fusebox as above, if its the earlier ceramic one its a bit more tricky as a bit of wire splicing is required. If your car is a GTI though, all the cold start bits you need are there, so just splice to the existing wires.  If not you need to trace where they need to go and add them in.

Can use the MK1 fuel pump relay, just make sure you get the type without a rev limiter built in. if you have the later blade fusebox you can add the proper 16v fuel pump trigger wire and use a digifant mk2 or 16v pump pump relay.

ah well. was it a gti before? if so a fair bit of it will be matching up the wire colours, most of the fusebox wires are for the WUR, 5th inj thermoswitch etc.  then you need some ign lives and earths to power up the isv control unit and other bits, shouldnt be too dificult teebeeayche

GUESS WHAT, as it was raining, my wife said 'how about doing the bathroom?'  9 Bloody hours later, 1 beday is out, the hole filled in, pipes removed etc, new towel rail, bog roll holder and toothbrush thingy is in, and to think that I could have wasted the day 'playing with my car'  :cry: :cry:

But I did go and say hello to my car, start it for the first time this year, put a big smile on my face.  I spent 3 days charging the battery for it, so imagine my suprise when I opened the bonnet, battery in hand, to find the battery all ready there, conected... where the F did the other one come from?  :huh: 
Had to drive it out of the garage, round the garage block and back again  :grin:, and managed to find one of those guys that says;
Is that a MK2? 
:angry: No mate, it's a MK1!
To which he replies, my mate had a Fiat 125 with a LOTUS engine, all chipped up, did about 180mph, well fast.
1) I don't think fiat made a 125
2) If they did, why would you put a LOTUS lump in it
3) Why did God put twitS like that on out plannet

Cheers for this, isn't it nice that VW thought ahead and decided that people in the future will be stuffing their bigger faster engines in to their shells?

Yes it has always been a GTI.

I was wondering whether to change the whole loom over, as the fuse box has seen better days and I don't have MFA, but the new Speedo bit does, and I want it  :smiley:.

I am not affraid to pull the car apart to do it and understand that the fuse box is on the other side, or is it reall not worth it?

what i would do is get a later mk1/cab/rocco loom instead, it'll fit pretty much straight in then. i might end up breaking my mk1 now so if so there will be a ready made mk1 16v engine loom plus later mk1 car loom ;)

Cool, will the MK2 Clocks with MFA fit your loom?  I can't remember your dash?

Mne has std MK1 clocks, but I do have a complete scirocco dash loom if you wanted it, this will work with pre-90 MK2 Golf 2 plug clocks, and scirocco ones obv :)
I do have some 2 plug 16v MK2 clocks as well, only thing is the main beam bulb is missing but its dirt cheap to buy from VW, or could just swap one over from other set o clocks.  you'll still need a later fusebox & loom to fit it tho, unless you fancy splicing it ito your old fusebox.

not decided if im gonna break it yet, got a guy who may be intertested in it as is but we'll see!

I did canabalise a sicrocco for the loom and clocks, but it was slightly too long in places, and too short in others, the grommets were slightly different too.

But tempted by it any way, as I have pre 90 two plug clocks.

When it is dry, I was going to put the MK2 loom on the grass, then lay my loom next to it and see if it can be put in, if not, an afternoon with the soldering iron and about a mile of shrink wrap...

But then again, I may get a 16v Sicrocco manifold and put the air flow meter on the standard side, which would mean modding the loom anyway!   :rolleyes:


Let me know if you decide to chop up the MK1, or sell the other loom. 

Why are you going to get rid of the MK1, you spent ages on that, what's wrong with it?

the plan was always to run it for a year then sell and switch back to the MK2, but over the last month its been a real bastard! first the non-return valve went on the pump leaving me stranded, then the head gasket went, fixed that and now the clutch has gone!
So I'm a bit fed up of fixing it, though I bought a clutch kit for it so might be arsed to take the gearbox off later on.  The MK2 is almost done, dispite it giving me a load of greif as well over the last couple of weeks, just failed the MOT due to a dicky back brake but hopefully its an easy fix otherwise cabby will be donating parts to repair!

scirocco loom is going either way if you want it, just sat in a bag in the garage. its literally just the dash loom though, had it in case i wanted to fit mk2 16v clocks but never bothered in the end

well if you come collect its free, i didnt pay anything for it tbh! could have a look around my black hole of crap aka garage and see if theres anything else you want  :grin:
