There's someone on ebay who can change it for you.

My VagCom arrived today - I wonder how you do this?!

I don't have a car to test it on yet

I think you scroll down on the mfd to factory settings which if it is a rhd car it should give you miles. You will then have to put all your other settings back if necessary to the way you want them such as lighting, conveniece etc. Hope that works!

Email the guy on ebay and ask him, if he wants a couple of quid for the answer (you could offer him a couple of £) I wouldnt mind chipping in to help, as that KPH is a pain in the ass.

I'll wait a while and see if someone answers it first - as I don't have my car yet anyway.
If not, then I'll try sending him an email.
I'm supposed to be gettng a loan Golf Plus tomorrow from the dealer until my car turns up... so I may have to have a play with my VagCom

Correct. I have configured a permanent MPH reading on the MFD for when I am in the UK. Quite useful, but I could live w/o it, TBH.

How did you manage to do that ?

How did you manage to do that ?

I can't remember, but it's just an option in the menu on continental cars. I can either have kph or mph digitally displayed, but as I already have the analogue kph dial, I thought having a simultaneous mph display might be useful for when I come over to England.

It's not nearly as exciting as R LEDs, though. I never really look at it

Changed mine to large MPH display today, also tried the "dial sweep" change but it did'nt work on mine as you need your instrument cluster part number to end in a certain letter.

If anyone's interested how to do it will post some instructions up(VCDS NEEDED).

I'd be interested, as I keep thinking I'm speeding when I'm not!

Actually your display should be more exciting since you never CAN watch your R Leds.... :lipsrsealed:
Anyway despite the fact that my leds will not be smokey I can hardly wait....so I know what you mean...much more exciting than standard....

Yes please!!  I have a VCDS - just no car yet!  I can try it on my courtesy one though.
I've already tried the 'staging' sweeping dials, but it tells me its not supported.

It is do-able... depending on the revision number of your instrument panel (I think?)
Works on some and not others.

Needle sweep coding;

17 instruments >> 10 adaption >> staging activated

This can only be done if your car is build from week 45, or you update the firmware to 575 (mine has 353) by your dealer.

km tot mph can also be changed by vag.com cable or like in mine car simply by goining to the option "Unit" in the board computer

Other codings can be found here, it's only in German

To Display large MPH on the MFD .

Go into controller 17 Instruments and change location to USA.

Click do it and exit. On MFD settings, scroll down to alt.speed. and untick.

In MFD info display tick digital speed.

You should now be able to have the big digital MPH showing in your MFD.

Same here - I suppose its the downside of setting the car as American - as all American cars bong when you start them up!
I think I'm just going to change my settings back to UK.

It's not a start-up bong, It's because you havn't got your seatbelt on(it's a seatbelt warning). You don't notice it in UK mode because it only start's beeping when you go over 10mph where in USA mode it bong's straight away when you don't have your seatbelt on.

The bong you hear when the door is open is because you have the key's in the ignition.

Daft question maybe.

Wouldn't changing to the U.S setting mean that mpg will be worked out for U.S gallons?

Yeah, but you can choose UK Gallons on the Highline display... and also change the Temp to Celcius and Time back to 24hour.

My next question then... how do I disable the seatbelt warning?  I don't mind it beeping if my keys are in the ignition when the door is open.  Its not something I do very often.

There is an easy fix for the beeping... change the instrument panel to Europe instead of UK - and you can set the speedo to MPH and not have to worry about the US style seatbelt / key in ignition warning.
I turned off the seatbelt warning anyway, as it annoys me that my passenger seat beeps when I have a bag sitting on it!

If you change it to EUROPE (germany etc) it will give you a larger problem. The mileage will be displayed in kilometers instead of miles!

For me i'd rather have the large MPH display option and i can live with the bongs (just put my seatbelt on and dont leave the keys in the ignition)

I havn't got EUROPE in my settings (germany, rest of world and a few more) and also can't change between kilometers - miles in the MFD.

Did also read somewhere if you cant activate staging(dial sweep) with VCDS you need to ask your VW dealer to update your instrument FIRMWARE and then you should be able to activate it but if your dealer's as dumb as mine i wouldn't count on it!

From what I was led to believe - if your car was build after week 45 (I think) then you can activate the staging feature - but you must use the latest beta version of the VagCom software from the RossTech website.
If your car was build before BW45, then you need to have your ECU's firmware updated by the dealer.

That instrument panel was fazed in slowly from week 45 i think but i could be wrong if it has the pointers with the black edges its the later one.

Mine definately stayed as MPH when I changed from USA -> Rest Of World.
Works great with the huge MPH display and no bongs.  I did have to change the consumption figures back to MPG UK as it changed to Litres.
