Title: golf mk2 1.6

just bought my first mk2 golf and was wondering it idles at 2000 rpm. any way i could decrease it and why is it idling at that? thanks

How do you know it's idling @ 2k rpm?

I thought all the 1.6's didn't come with a rev counter  :huh: ofc it could have been added after, but maybe dodgy connection?

Does it sound like it's idling that high?

its an automatic choke. and its definitely idling at 2. it goes up to 3 then drops to 2 usually

He hasn't said but it could be a driver, they came with rev counters, both 1.6 and 1.8 versions.

If its a pierburg carb (everyones had problems with these), then invest in a weber DTML conversion (£250ish for a new kit), it will transform the overal running of the car. MPG will improve aswell as power.

That's a rather sweeping statement to make on a both counts.

1.) I had a 1.6 Driver and it had no rev counter, yes it was a Driver not CL.
2.) On said 1.6 Driver it had a auto-Pierburg and it ran almost flawlessly for the whole 16 months I had it, including in the snow we had a few years back.

Check rubjonnys guide in the maitenance section there is a carb guide in there.
My dad had this problem with his but i cant remember what he changed although it was cheap and 10 min job.
I had a webber on a 1600 ryder and once it was setup well it was a million times better than the pierburg

could be the coolant o'ring, tho if it was that it would run uber rich for ages on a cold start. if when its been running for absolutly ages it starts running better then that is an indication the oring has gone.  its all in my faq tho :)
to check for an air leak on the flange, wiggle the carb when its running. if engine note changes then replace the flange.
