This is only my personal opinion, of course, but I saw a new GTD in my dealer's showroom this morning and it had the 'normal' LED rear lights, i.e. not the darker R version. I was pretty surprised by the colour, TBH. They looked really bright red, like the sweets my 2 year old eats  The GTD was white, so maybe that's why they looked so red, but I really think the darker R lights will look a lot nicer on most colours. You have been warned

As I have white, you think I should 100% go for the darker 'R' lights then mate ?
-
Mine look ok. I guess that's down to the colour of the car what with mine being quite dark..
-
Absolutely, Kev. The non-R LEDs I saw this morning look even brighter red than the 'old' non-GTI lights on bog standard Golfs. Didnt look nice on white at all!
-
Man...
My monkey-dealer said all the same no colordifference so I ordered the GTI leds.................I should have stayed in bed today bad news everywhere
Is there some "proof" that there exist color difference I can use towards my stealer...to rattle his cage.
-
It's difficult to quantify redness/brightness, but the LEDs I saw on the white GTD this morning were definitely redder/brighter than the 'old' GTI lights I had on my car.
-
Hi frog what I mean is ...is there on the web an existing LED GTI and LED R....so I have something to throw with...
-
Seen them in Germany the factory option ones are very red.

When I bought mine from eBay Germany about 5 weeks ago, most of the sets advertised were for the R type, but some were the standard GTI. TBH, I couldn't really tell the difference from the eBay photos, but thought I might as well get the sportier R ones. Having seen the GTI ones today, I'm glad I did.

Yep for sure, It's like night and day seeing them side by side. I also think the GTI ones look, well, kinda cheap.

Have to agree with you there. They look like fake ones from Hong Kong.

I must say that the R leds look far superior to the Gti ones,
The darker red should go nice against my Tornado Red  anone got any pics of a red one with R leds
-
Looks like the r ones are smoked plastic and the gti are not.
-

NO THEY ARE NOT!!! Just kidding Kev.. each to their own.
-
The Led lights look nice but four hundred pounds ? For me the normal tail lights are not that bad and don't justify the out lay for the Led's. Each to their own but I understand people wanting to personalise their car.
Had it been the ones you see on Audi cars where by you press the brake and you get the first led bulb light coming on and spreading to the rest I would lay out the money for that system.

I agree with you that for what they are, theyare hugely expensive. I don't really consider it personalising, however, more like getting an 'OEM plus' look, especially now that these LEDs are available as a factory option.
Here's a good comparison between the GTI LEDs and the R model:

they're just lights... 400 notes... ffs

I take it these lights are standard on the new Polo as I have seen a few on the road with them.

Small changes though Guy can make a big difference. I know they are expensive but thats VW for you.
-
 I cant wait any longer
 Don't worry, though, to us these LEDs are a matter of life or death, but women can't tell the difference so your wife isn't going to know that you've blown the holiday money on them

Just lights?! The R LEDs are so gorgeous, you can w@nk over them

make it go and stop faster than it does already.. then you won't need to be a w@nker as you'll be jizzing all over the shop

I thought you would be all for it Guy. Being into detailing and one of the things with that is improving a cars look. Is it just the price that puts you off ? Some of the guys here have sold their old lights so have paid roughly £250-£300 all in for their upgrades to the LED's.
-
It actually depends on the colour car you have...
I definitely find the bright red ones better looking on white and red cars....but ugly (= less succesfull) on the black ones....
On Carbon Grey I would prefer the darker ones but the brighter ones do no harm....at least a first impression...based on pics on this forum.

Not so sure Erik, golfgti5's pics on page 2 of the White GTI with the R LED's look the dogs danglies.

With the 'old' system, we had just two types of rear light:
(1) bog standard bright red
(2) darker filament GTI
Now we have four types:
(1) bog standard bright red
(2) darker filament GTI
(3) optional LED GTI
(4) R GTI
Following VW's marketing logic whereby dark=sporty, (3) should be at least as dark as (2), but it ain't. It's even pinker and girlier than (1) :undecided:
-
To help bring the cost down for anyone interested I am trying to sort a mini group buy, I already have two people interested and if I can get another two then I think a lower price is doable.
So if anyone is ready to buy some with the plug and play wiring adapters (just need VCDS coding, which I can help with if your near Milton Keynes or London) then drop me a PM

Steve, I'd create a new thread, that way everyone can see it without having to search through here.

Well I must admit that darker will most likely be nicer on myCarbon Grey car but you can't win them all....it is ordered the official way so no choice for me

Why? Just tell your dealer it was their fault for misinforming you about the colours. They should be able to change the order, especially if you don't open the boxes when they arrive. I ordered a pair of front mudflaps a few months ago, but when I put them on they looked awful, so I took them back to the dealer and they refunded my money.
-
I will send them an email and give it a shot....They will probably tell me that they misinformed but that it is not possible to get the "R" led-lights on a GTI in the factory...anyway I must be careful not to wind myself up....since buying a car is supposed to be fun...
-
Oh right, sorry, I misunderstood. You have ordered them as an option on your yet-to-be-delivered car? I thought you already had the car and were looking to buy the LEDs as an accessory/spare part like I did :embarassed:
-
exactly....but the fact remains that i specifically asked for the R version.....but he said "No difference"....STUPID MONKEY-DEALER

Yes, it's frustrating, but your dealer is right. If I had asked the factory to fit my GTI with the electric rear seat from the Phaeton, or the roof from the Eos, I doubt they would have said yes...
-
Sorry...STUPID MONKEY VW DEALER......
He should have said:.... they look indeed different but you can only have the GTI on your GTI....as you said it all makes perfect sense...
BTW...he gave me the Phaeton rear seat and EOS sunroof on my GTI
