where is the thermostat on the KR engine?
If it was stuck would it cause engine to overheat in traffic very quick?
My car seems to get very hot very quik when in traffic. If moving it's fine and temp gauge
is central.
any advice

Does the fan come on? If the thermostat is stuck then yes it will cause the car to overheat.

More likely that the rad fan isn't kicking in. Could be the fan has packed up or the thermo switch in the bottom of the radiator has failed. The fan should turn on when the gauge is between half and three quarters (ish). You can jump the fan directly off the battery to check its working, if it is then its probably the thermo switch that needs replacing.

fan was kicking in - i'll check it out not heard it for while
thermostat is £8 so worth changing
where is it though - side of block below dizzy?

have a read of the coolant system faq, takes you thru how to test each part of the cooling system :)

The thermostat is way down below the alternator under a plastic housing held on with two small bolts, under the PAS pump bracket (if you have PAS), follow the bottom hose out of the radiator and its at the end of that. Make sure you get a new O ring seal with it, use only oem parts for this important item.
If your thermostat was the problem it would tend to run hot or cold all the time. The temperature is supposed to rise a bit when you're not moving, so long as the fan cuts in and brings it down again that's quite normal. Not sure if the 16v has a 2 speed fan, it could be that the high speed is not working, but I wouldn't expect it to be needed this time of year.

Ive just changed my radiator the old one has still got a working 2 pin fan switch on it,its yours if u want it.

fixed the cooling prob................. but the system coolant level / pressure/ over temp light kept flashing
when fan licks in and goes off when temp is settled back to centre and fan is off.
I had noticed the coolant level did change .......this should not happen.
while pondering in garage with bonnet up i could hear a hissing coming from expansion bottle.
I noticed tghe seal on bottle had gone.
What would that do?? I've replaced it but not been out in car to try it out.
