Post by: pal1 on 08 November 2004, 17:25
i am having problems with my 89 16v mk2 and its gradually getting worse.
shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st its hard to engage the gears its worse when cold or when very hot.
i am thinking its the syncro gone any ideas? ???

You are probably right about it being a worn synchromesh but it's probably worth getting the alignment of your linkages checked before you condemn the synchro. You might find that putting some slick50 in your gearbox makes things a lot better. I think it's about ?16 for an 80ml bottle which is meant to be good for a lot of miles (can't remember what they quote but certainly over 40k).

id agree on getting the alignment sorted first
