I've got a spare bulb we can change it when we change the ashtray surround unless you're going to get the ashtray surround and side repeaters elsewhere

The switch cover to the middle knob just clips off, you pull out the green optic thing and you can see the tiny bulb deep in the hole in the middle of the knob. You need very long thin nose pliers to pull the bulb out or you can be clever and use some thin flexible tube to push over it and pull/suck it out, takes 2 min. I did it the hard way by taking the surround & ashtray all out and then dismantled the switch from the back, took 20 min. Thought I'd been clever, then my son, who is a VW techy showed me the proper way........doh!!!!!!!!!   :embarassed:

I've always done it by removing the astray + surround, never done it the way you just mentioned. Never takes me 20 minutes though, more like 5 minutes

Well, maybe 5min if you have nimble fingers, but I'm a bit kak at fiddley stuff. Anyway, next time the bulb blows (in 15 yrs maybe) I'll do it the proper way VW designed it to be done. It can be a pig getting the knob cover off but I've tried it myself now and it does come off with a bit of a squeze, mind you I never tried getting the bulb out. Anyway, the proper and quickest way, if you've got the right kit, is to pop the knob off and do it from the front.

I'm actually going to go outside and try this because I fail to see my bulb coming through a gap in the centre of the middle control knob lol

Here are some pics.

Remove the knob cover & green optic.

Now you can see the small bulb right in the middle.

That's the same bulb that you can get to from the rear by taking the centre panel out etc.

Apologies for the fuzzy pics.

It does indeed mate. Load of sh!te hey?

Jezza - that method looks easy but I don't fancy my chances taking the bulb out with a pair of pliars, or putting the new one back in for that matter

Yes, all via a plastic optic that runs behind all the knobs. Got mine in Halfords, 1.2w I believe with two prongs, it just pulls out/pushes in.

VR6-Joe - I think you would need to soften the pliers with some insulating tape first. The worst that could happen is you end up doing it the long way if you break the bulb. As said, with some rubber fuel hose (or so I'm told by the pro's) you can suck it out quite easily.

Well I did it last month and used a spare bit of white appliance cable. Nicely fits into the bulb and makes replacing easy. Have included photo if it helps

lol me and joe did it tonight on my car (thanks joe) and his way is so much quicker lol.

you can pick it out with your fingers, no fooking about :)

undo the heater dials so they come down, take of the white plastic casing on the back, take of the green thingy, and then remove bulb.

simples lol
