Title: electric windows again
Post by: scott73 on 15 March 2010, 10:21
hi guys

i know this subject has been covered many times but i cannot find a thread where a simple answer has been provided. most questions have been left unanswered.

the drivers door window keeps dropping intermitantly.  i have disconected it at the door switch but it still occurrs.  i have noticed a split wire just before the conector plug could this be it?

i have also tried to find the fuse for the windows but cannot find any info either.

the problem is i visit the ghetto areas of birmingham every day through work and twice last week i came back to the car and the window was down.  its only a matter of time before it gets nicked. plz help...........

Can't really help you as to why it keeps happening but if it's a major problem then I would suggest getting the door card off and disconnecting the power plug from the window motor for a temporary solution. This would stop the window from coming down until you can find the answer to your problem.      Cheers      Deano

when you refer to the power switch do you mean where it plugs into the window switch? if so i have tried this and it still drops down?

No Mate      Remove the door card and you will see the window motor bolted to the door. Remove the large power connector from this and the motor will not be getting any power rendering the window mechanism useless. If you are struggling and want to take a drive over to mine later I can show you how to do it in five minutes or so. I only live in Pensnett near the Merry Hill centre if it's any good to you and should be back from work at half six(ish).     Cheers      Deano

Have you tried replacing the whole mechanism? Should be able to pick one up for about £20. It's pretty straight forward to replace, as soon as you get the door card off you will see the 3 bolts that you just take off. from then on it's pretty obvious.

Some thing like this would do :)

you sure its not the mechanism thats broke? can you slide the window back up by hand with out using the motor? does it make odd clicking noises?

i've disconected it now.

the window just comes down of its own accord.

sometimes it will go back up & it will go straight back down and it takes countless attempts until it finally stays up. then 2 mile down the road it will happen again.

i have not tried pushing it up by hand incase i break something.

it has made a clicking noise.

Hi Mate.     I have a window mechanism for the front drivers side from a 5 door model. If you want to try this you can collect it for 20 quid and I will help you to fit it while you are here. I have no motor but can swap yours over easily enough.  Let me know     Cheers     Deano

I have an issue with my drivers side window not going down. There is a click and a power drop when ticking over and pressing the button to go up but nothing at all when going down. I have stripped the door card off and tested and the motor is definately getting power on the up and the down press of the switch.
So i decided to try and remove the motor but when the bolts are undone nothing seems to want to drop very far (maybe half an inch) and it all seems to tight to get out.
I can't slide the window down by hand so I am thinking something could be jammed but it is hard to see and I can't seem to get the old mechanism out -can anyone offer any advice? Is there only the bolts you can see in the door to remove or is there something holding the glass in place that needs to be undone but cant easily be seen?

Any help appreciated.

There are 2 glass holders, and 2 bolts on each one on the holders. They might be hidden in the middle of the dor, if the window is fully up.

You can actually take out the mechanism, without removing the window, but you will have to stick it on top, and then remove the mechanism from the bottom. A bit tricky job.

Thanks for that. I can't see the glass holders at the moment and the glass is in the fully up position.
I was trying to remove the mechanism last night with the glass in place but while it would move side to side slightly, and down about half an inch it didnt seem to want to go any further and the runner legs were hitting the bottom of the inside of the door?
Its driving me mad. Not even sure what the problem is when I can hear a click at the motor on the up press but nothing on the down even though I have proven that there is current getting to the motor on both presses of the switch?
Sorry to hijack the thread!

move the window down, release the clamps, slide the window up by hand + tape it in position, double check all bolts are undone+ wiggle it out.

If the window is not going down enough to see the two clamps that hold the glass then you will need to remove the motor first. This is just screwed to the mechanism. Then very carefully there is a spool in the motor that holds the two ends of the wire. Carefully remove this as it hurts if you do it wrong     When this is removed you should be able to push the glass down by hand enough to see the two clamps at the bottom of the glass. Unbolt these a bit and push the glass back into the up position and wedge it or tape it in place. Then you can remove the mechanism easier and place it on the ground so you don't tangle it up.     Hope this helps      Cheers      Deano

Thanks for the tips - I will take a look at the weekend as I definately can't move the window down far enough by hand.
Any clues on what the root cause may be as I was sure it was electrical when there was no click from the motor on the down press but I have tested and proved the power is getting to the motor on both the up and down presses?
If it is the motor and I am going to have to remove this before I can get the glass out anyway, do I need to take the whole mechanism out? To be honest from memory, I can't see how I would get the motor out in its current position?

It would be miles easier to change the motor with the mechanism out of the door. With the mechanism unbolted from the door you should be able to move the mechanism enough to undo the screws that hold the motor in place. Then remove the spool with the wires in. This will allow you to remove the glass clamps and get the mechanism out. Then just put your spool in the new motor and screw this back in place then put the entire mechanism back in the door and bolt back into place. You should then be able to reconnect the window button and lower the mechanism down which will enable you to lower the glass down and put it back in the clamps and tighten up.

If the power is getting to the motor but nothing happens then the motor is shagged and replacing this should solve your problem. Should take about an hour tops to change it.      Cheers     Deano

Cheers for that Deano - will the motor from the drivers side rear be OK to use as I am not to bothered about that working?

I'm not totally sure but I think they are different. You should be able to pick one up cheap either off here or flea bay.   I have the mechanism but sold the motor.   Good Luck though      Deano

Can anyone tell me if the passenger and drivers regulator and motor are interchangeable i.e. do I have to find a second hand one from the drivers side to replace mine or can I get one from another cars passenger side and use it on my drivers side?
Thanks in advance

Drivers side and Passenger side are different I believe Mate. You will need to find a drivers side mechanism and motor if you want it working Buddy.      Cheers      Deano
