Title: 16v MK1 questions and stuff
Post by: kraM on 14 March 2010, 18:11
Hi

I have a 1989 1.8 KR lump to go into my 1981 MK1 GTi.

I (may) have been given some 83mm pistons, which I am told will fit.

With an 83mm bore, it will give me 1840cc, not quiet the 2000cc I'd thought.

Is is worth getting a crank from a scrapper to go out to 2000cc, or just stick with the 1840cc?

If the crank is the way forward?  If so, which engine should I look for?

Going to have a play with my head (the metal one on the engine) as aparently they respond well to porting and polishing?

I've noticed that the inlet maniforld (tis the phat one ) has an intentation on the number 4 track, to avoid the cam chain.  Is this going to make huge amounts of difference to the air flow, or should I not worry about it.

Last bit...

I have moved my servo to the drivers side of the car, and as such, I don't think the inlet manifold will fit, as the throttle body will be pointed directly at it.  My plan was to get someone to chop the pleunm chamber in half, then weld it back together upside down, so the intake is on the orignal MK1 side, then try and get some longer fuel lines.  What do you reckon, good or bad idea?

Cheers boys and girls

You could look for a scirocco 16v intake manifold, that has the inlet on the oppose side to the golf ones

why don't you just by a 2.0 block I stead of messing about with pistons?  Yes 16v engines respond very well to p+p!!!

There is a sicrocco manifold on e-bay at the moment, but I don't have the £300 asking price    Hence the hacking it about with a saw...

Everyone keeps telling me that about the 2L lump, but i am thinking that it may too need a re-bore, I suppose I could grab a 2L engine and make 1 good one with the pile of bits and a big hammer

Cheers

The rocco manifolds usually fetch £120 so keep an eye out on edition mate
