Title: Engine swap info
Post by: benvictors on 14 March 2010, 13:34
I have 2 8v GTi's at the mo and I am wanting to do an engine swap

The shell I want to use is a 96 (N) and has an AGG engine with seimens ECU, this engine has done just short of 200,000 miles and the gearbox is fooooked!!!
I want to keep the after market Toad alarm with the keys (I have 2 sets for this car)

The donor is a 93 (L) with a 2E engine and Bosch ECU, this engine has done 100,000 and runs perfectly, its also a lot swifter than the AGG.

My main questions are -
1. can I just stick the 2E engine in and use my existing seimens ECU, keys and alarm???
2. If not, how difficult is it to get the donor ECU programmed to my Keys and alarm???
2a. Can I do the programming myself, I have all the vag-com, vag-tacho software, just need to buy the cable and someone to tell me how to do it
3.Are the wiring looms the same on each engine??

Thanks in advance.

hey  ben

mine is 2E, they are the best ones!!, you will need the ECU from the 2E, mine dont have no programed keys, and the ECU is not coded so their should be no problems

what is the doner car like? how many doors does it have, i mite need some bits off it to?

Bummer init!!!!
Both mine are off the road for the moment
You gonna sort me a set out at Mungo's then matey??

Getting back to the cars, will I have to get my Toad alarm re-fitted once I've swapped the engines over, there isn't a chip in the donor keys which means the ECU isnt coded yes???
Soooo, I should be able to use the existing ignition barrell and keys?!?!

yeah the alarm will need re fitting (i got a in car electrics mate who is awesome if needed) and i would say you can use your ignition and keys yea as the ECU is not coded and neither are the keys

not sure on main looms, they could be the same, i cant see the swap been too hard at all

i will get u on at my one of my nites at mungo matey yeah, be a good crack, ill speak to you when i see you next about it

Forgot to ask, do I need to inform the DVLA of the engine swap even tho they are basically the same engine??
Are they gonna ask for receipts an sh!t to prove its been done properly??
Will a valid MOT cetificate be proof enough after the swap is complete??

Should I change the mileage to the new engine mileage or leave it as the car mileage??
Cheers.

yo dude

dont think they need to know as its same engine matey and when my brother put a new engine in my old escort runner (same engine like your doing) he didnt have to say anything or provide any other info to anyone

you could run the early clocks or just leave your mileage if your not fussy, if you want them changed i know a guy in leeds that does it for 30 quid, he changed my annie dials to my original mileage, took him 5 mins!!

I would keep the milliage the same as the car to keep the MOT's running in sequence.

As for the engine, it might be worth just delcaring the change so the engine number matches up.

Might be mad, yes yours has done 200K but why would you want to put a older engine in, seems a lot of work for very little gain.

Ye i know it sounds a bit mad but the engine I'm putting in has done half the mileage and is in loads  better shape than mine.
Also the gearbox needs replacing on mine which is a job in itself, I figure for the extra 2-4 hours work I can have a much cleaner engine in her.
I suppose I could just put the donor car through an MOT and run that, its only done 500 miles since the last one so should fly through in theory (Apart from the de-cat issue maybe)
Im just not keen on the colour!!!

Ye I'll still have it, thinkin of slingin it through its test now so gonna give it a lil' tart up first, the bodywork and interior needs a good clean and its missin so get that sorted, get my black wheels on it and see what it looks like.
Although by tomorrow I may have changed my mind again

Just this one, after a quick soapy lather -
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture371-1.jpg)

Needs a proper good clean still tho, its been stood for the best part of 6 months, was full of mould, leaves an dirt when I picked it up. think the paintwork will come up nice tho

Early spec, even has the early spec rims, same year as mine but mine had late spec rims

i like it mate, the early ones are the best and strongest

its got a non gti grill (as its black)

where u find it?

With some better rims etc that would be ok.
Title: Re: Engine swap info
Post by: benvictors on 14 March 2010, 21:28
Ye dont see many of them alloys about, think I'll re-furb an sell em, might struggle to get the centres for em tho, nearside front and back are missing.
Even with the miss-fire its quicker than my Flash red un, the more I think about it the more I think the engine swap may be a silly idea.

With some better rims etc that would be ok.

I've decided, Gonna get it all cleaned up this week, get my Graphite Grey Alloys an wheel spacers on it and possibly some lowering springs I've got knocking about and take it from there.
The problem I then have is what do I do with my Flash red one, its only got 2 months T & T on it, 192,000 miles on the clock and a twitted gearbox............
Hhhmmmmmm, more fecking decisions!!!

Ye apart from a couple of little rust spots its pretty damn good, might throw 200 notes at it for a new box and a years test then flog it, what do you reckon I'd get for it all nicely runnin £600 - £700 maybe????
