Title: Running car without power steering
Post by: leigh_harty on 13 March 2010, 17:31
basically my hose has give way (split just before banjo at the pump end).. i know that running without any fluid WILL burn the pump out. whats the long term affects? i.e if i burn the motor out can i still steer? i know thats a cowboy way of thinking but i need my car but cnt afford the repair yet

what engine is it? you could just take off the belt to save the pump.

and will put more stress on the universal joints.

Take the hose off and take it to your local branch of Pirtek and they will make you one up cheaply.

Burning out the pump is going to cost you a lot more in the long run. Also running the rack dry isn't going to do that any favours either.

mate, I had the exact same problem with a B5 A4 1.8 (P reg) and it lost all the fluid on the motorway. I had to continue with no replacement fluid and nowhere to stop to get the belt off on the Glasgow M8 "Clearway" where the signs state there is no stopping for 36 miles.....I ploughed on, and the pump actually caught fire, no sh!t bud.

Cruising at 70 with 4 passengers late for a flight, the engine compartment started pissing smoke, then the flames appeared!!! I was forced to stop and bail out - closing a carriageway of the M8 (not a popular breakdown in heavy traffic, but hey.

I would defo take the belt off, but it'll steer like a Panzer....you will however build arms like Arnie!

Some branches of Pirtek will not make steering hoses due to HSE laws.

This is the issue i had with mine, it currently has no power steering.  I lost all my fluid about 12 months ago. Had to drive it home dry (about 3 miles) Finally got it repaired and filled back up and the pump was knackered. Changed it with a cheapo one from ECP and the new one was rubbish, just wined constantly and on full lock it would squeal. Finally managed to source a genuine brand new VAG pump cheap, vw wanted way over £200!! Went to fit the new one and the line had corroded that badly it split when i removed the nut the pump end!

After driving all over the place trying to find a new high pressure line, i found a guy that makes them up and got a new one for just over £70. So that will be my mothers day project!

If you run a search for 'power steering store' on google and ebay you should be able to find him.

So yeah, dont run the pump dry, definately remove the belt if you need to drive it!
