Debit card.
First clear it with your bank that you will be withdrawing the stated sum for payment to the named business.
Otherwise, as you well know, they will block payment of very large sums. This is understandable and is for your own security.

+1

Just clear it with your bank first.

Yeah, debit  card. Let you bank know and you'll probably have to have the transaction validated but should be fine

Oh yeah, bank loan, but paid for the car with debit card. You dont need to tell your bank before hand, but what will happen is that when they (dealer) calls up to verify funds are there you will most likely need to talk to the bank who will ask some simple security questions.

Phoned the bank the day before I collected car and asked for a bankers draft made out to the stealers for the amount owing, no problems and nice and easy transaction.

Depends on your bank.

Doesn't matter how much you have stashed some banks will put a limit on debit card transactions.

Check first to avoid embarrassment.

I dont know who you bank with, but I work for the current #2 bank on the high street, and any transaction above £10,000 done on a debit card would immediately be blocked and flag a security alert on your account.

I personally bank with HSBC, I had to call them to advise of a large debit card transaction today, and once informed, then you have 30 minutes to get your card in the PDQ machine.

I know some banks take quite a long time to santion the transactions even when there are enough funds available. Lloyds TSB has been pretty good to me. Took them 15 minutes!
Nat West were much, much slower.

You have ACC. Do you find it useful?

Quickly changing topic:
You have ACC. Do you find it useful?

It's early days yet, I can certainly notice the difference between switching modes, It's almost like I can feel the car drop slightly when going into sport mode.  Hard to put into words.

I went for a 60 mile drive after 9pm tonight, along the coast road to Eastbourne.  Had a bit of fun with a mk4 for several miles going past Beachy Head, he kept getting too close behind so i wanged it over to manual gears, switched to sport on the ACC and I was gone.  He couldnt keep up.  That was with me "taking it easy" and not going over 1/4 throttle or above 3000rpm.  I cant wait until I hit 1200 miles and I can really drive it!

Best ask me about ACC in a few weeks time when I can appreciate it.

£1000 deposit in cash on order, then a cheque for the balance on delivery.

This is the best reply, though:

Must have made you feel a bit sick withdrawing all that money from your current account but much better minutes later when the car was all yours!

Paying in cash? OMG. They must have had a hell of a party afterwards! The Inland Revenue should be informed if they have not declared this.
Hope he got a hell of a discount!

Switch for me... they had to call the bank and get some personal details - mothers maiden name etc.
I guess it will be the same when I pick up my R... despite me having had the cash in my account for about 8 months!

My dealer insisted on an electronic transfer from my bank account via Switch the day before collection.

Part Ex, then rest via debit card, however..... I get cash back on my credit card so thinking of transfering all the dosh to my credit card, and then paying on that (or max it out then pay the ballance the next day).

Works out at should get at least a few hundred pounds for nothing!

Did this on the other car and got about £300 cash back!

Which credit card have you got? Sounds like a good idea, but generally my card limit is about £5k - which would make a £35k transaction tricky.

There's a few diffrerent ones out there which give cash back (look out for introduction rates which drop after a while).
Tend to be about 1.5%
Also check out if you can go into credit

For the other car, I got a new capital one card at about the same time as it, so used it to pay a chunk of the price and the rest via the debit card - got a good few hundred pounds back.

Not sure what's out there regarding other cards, I think Amex do the same if I recall. Worth checking it out - money for old rope etc.

Just make sure you pay the cash onto the card asap after or before the transaction to avoid interest lol !!!!!

I'll maybe give the dealer a shout and ask if they take credit card.  Given that I've got about 4 weeks, I could probably set myself up with a new credit card in that time.  If its money for old rope, its worth a shot!

3K deposit + balance will be paid from my current account
So one in all, paid cash, no loans.

The idea is not to damage my property investment capacity, which is limited to 1/3rd of your net wages in France

wow they charged you for using credit card? Hmmm didn't have a problem with the last car but it wasn't a VW. Also it's a little odd as do they charge for when you pay for the car's service via CC? Sounds odd to me On the Mk5 I'm looking at  paying for a year 4 service & cambelt change, which was just shy of £700 and nothing been said re a 1.5% fee for using CC from my local dealer. I'll report back in the next couple of weeks when I pick up the car.

I think the credit card charge is only when buying a car for large sums (> £500) and not for servicing etc.

Correct - Nearly. The maximum anyone can take in cash is £9k due to money laundering regulations. Assuming you had a p/x though it could be feasible the changeover value was less than that.

I think the credit card charge is only when buying a car for large sums (> £500) and not for servicing etc.

Credit card charges take place every time you use your card. It's only on large transactions that the charge is transferred onto yourself as the dealership would potentially stand to lose a lot of money through charges.

Indeed, CC payments cost the retailer something like 2.5 per transaction, though its variable depending how busy the retailer is.  Your supermarket has already factored it into the shelf price which is why you don't notice it, or many other retail stores.  The service side of the dealers will have factored it into their prices as well but the car sales won't as it will obviously add a hefty premium to any car they sell.
