Hey again,
Ok, when reversing my car especially when wheel turned hard left or right there is a loud wining noise as if something is rubbing on the brakes, i did have a stuck caliper the other week but i replaced this from another gti. Could it be the caliper or could the handbrake be sticking. Any ideas ppl. Thanks again.
Steve.

Hi Tony had a new gearbox fitted 4 months ago it does do it all the time just every now and then. I sounds like it's coming from the back of the car and not the gearbox. And yeh it's a 8v buddy.

Mine does the same Mate. Does it only happen now and then and not all the time?? I was told it was my pads worn unevenly. I looked at them and they had plenty of life left and will change them soon. Cheers Deano

Hi Deano
Yeh mine does the same, also got fairly new pads on the back so not sure what's going on dude, does my head in, especially when ppl turn to look at the awful noise lol.

Yeah know what you mean Mate. But forget them it's not damaging your car or them. I keep checking my discs just in case but seen nothing untoward yet.

I fit new rear disc and pads not so long ago. It's only just started to do it a few weeks ago and it's on and off as i said. Just don't like these niggly things I've spent a lot on my car over the past few months getting it back to it's original glory. he he.

could be loads of things lol.
power steering if on full lock? check the belt,
rear pads, as mentioned.
rear disks warped?
my choice would be gearbox

Don't think mine is power steering belt as mine only does it when reversing in a straight line. Also the noise is defo coming from the rear axle area. So I would go for the pads or maybe discs so this will be my next job but will wait a bit to get some more wear as mine is not that bad. Usually only does it in one place so I can put up with it a while longer yet.

dodgy wheel bearing - whining while running backwards?
I have never heard brakes "whine" - but maybe we are using different terminology of sound. Mine only ever "grind" like dragging metal along tarmac - or "squeal" like rubber soles on a polished floor - if u know what i mean mate.
Whining I would liken to the sound of a washing machine on low spin, like the noise reverse gear makes cos theres no synchromesh on reverse. like a mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm noise? lol

Hey, gear box is new 4 months ago, the sound is deff from the rear axle area, and it doesn't always do it just every now and then as if some thing is rubbing or catching/scrapping when reversing.

rear disc backplates touching the disc / wheel, or unevenly worn pads?

I was told the rear pads have uneven wear but I would also agree with the earlier posting suggesting wheel bearings.

New wheel bearings all round mate, unless one faulty one but i've changed 2 faulty ones on the rear in the past 3 months.

what about worn bearing housings on the stub axles? Cant remember the arrangement as I havent pulled the rears that far down for years on a golf but maybe the outer ring is spinning on one bearing when reversing.
Maybe a friendly garage with a brake dyno can simulate reversing on the rear wheels and you can hear what the noise is like from outside? By reversing onto the dyno then running it up.

Could be a dodgy wheelbearing.
