Title: Mk5 or Mk6
Post by: rsreid2000 on 12 March 2010, 16:06
I am totally new to Golf's as I have been associated with Ford RS's for 25 years having owned various RS's over the years.
I now need an automatic and I have narrowed it down to the Evo X and the Golf GTI DSG. The Evo would not be an easy car to live with everyday due to running costs and I think they stand out in the crowd a bit therefore attracting the wrong type of attention. The Golf on the other hand seems to blend in and not stand out as much, which I like as it will be my daily drive.

My questions are would I be better buying a 12 month old MK6 or good Mk5. Looking around the MK6's are going for around £25,000 and a good Mk5 is around £20,000. I could stretch to the MK6 but is it worth the extra money. I have seen a MK5 with leather and Sat Nav for £21,000 with 12,000 mile on it (08 reg). Do you think this is over priced compared to a (09 reg) MK6.

Any help for a newbie would be appreciated.

IMHO, the Mk6 is slightly better than the Mk5 in every way and is the first Golf I have actually liked the look of since the Mk1.

I would go for the ED30 mk5 , which is an outstanding car!! I know where there is one for sale if your intrested PM me , it was my old car with just 12,000 on the clock.

or spend another 8-9k for a same spec car in the mk6.

Wait a year for the 6 to loose its 1st year hit personally.

Mk5 edition 30 or Pirelli would be my choice.

If you can find a desirable ED30 MKV, go for that - it's more niche and will retain value better. Faster too!

If it's a standard GTI, go with MKVI - the fit and finish is superior. :afro:

the fit and finish is superior??? I'm not so sure about this?? I have to question it a bit, I do think the Ed30 is a lot more of a solid car than the MK6, but the mk6 is more refined IMO!!

The ED30 is brilliant motor and you can do loads of mods with it!!

Or leave it standard and in a few years when they become collectable yours will be so rare it will be worth a fortune as all the others are modified and worthless to collectors

Indeed this is true, The one I had was standard , it was fast enough anyway for me!!

I did this and drove to Manchester from Aberdeen... 1 year ago exactly tomorrow - and some halfwit smashed into me and wrote it off!  The curse of Friday 13th!

Minor mods like CAI, remap, Millteks and wheels are very simple to put back to standard. Everything I have modded (apart from the exhaust as I swapped the standard for the Milltek) is in my garage ready to go back on when it comes to resale time.

As for the question, Id rather have a MK6 as its newer, but in a real world I would get a ED30 as it will be considerably cheaper for not much diffrence (in fact you get get 20bhp MOREpower in the ED30).

Yup.

I've had both and the mk6 is worth the extra cost if you've got the money.
If you're on a budget then the mk5 is a brilliant car.

Lol I was just thinking the same thing. Everyone is far to well behaved.

On seconds thoughts I wouldn't bother with the MK6, it's just a MK 5.5 really ;)

Wow, thats given some food for thought.
I never even considered the ED30, are they hard to come by?
Some one mentioned the R32, they go some around the same money as a MK5 on a 09 plate, but are around 6 miles to the gallon worse off.
The running costs are not the issue, I would just like the car to be there when I got back to it and I think the Golf is not over the top in looks as say the Evo X.
I have 3 months to make my mind up and the GTI is ticking all boxes, are they easy to live with as a daily car, for example, Parking up safely. I know with the RS's you were worried every time you left it. Thanks for all the advice.

them that drive a mark 5 is because they cant afford a mark 6- 'simples!'
would u rather drive an old model or something that is the latest, design....
its like buying a tv.  either buy an old lcd or stump up for a glossy 3d tv.....
at the end of the day its all about budget.  if u buy a mark5 then u will join a fair few of them on the road- there are 'faeces' loads of them.
Title: Re: Mk5 or Mk6

An edition 30/pirelli is just a 2wd mk6 Golf R or a scirocco R at much cheaper rate.
Just because somethings newer does not make it better.
Edition 30 there are plenty for sale about, the pirelli is the rare one ,and the one i wanted i just could not find one with xenons in the colour i wanted. So i went for a new mk6 option and wish i had not.

I don't actually think (well, sort of lol) that its a 5.5 :)

I have to agree its not a MK5.5 at all mate its very differant motor IMO , me personaly I think the 5 is much more solid car and a great motor, and would buy one any day!!

The reason i bought the 6 was simply because I dont keep my cars for more than a year, and I love brand new cars !!

if your not bothered about consumption the R32 is the best out there... and the fastest bar the Golf R (which is sily money). It would be my choice for noise alone.

I love the banter on this site... and we couldn't have it without everyone's individual pov!

As long as GTD owners accept the GTD is inferior to the GTI then I welcome their opinion

Nah... I like the GTD tbh. It makes sense and makes diesels desirable I reckon. As for the R models then I think they should be welcome. GolfGTI is all about the fast Golf... now there are just different models of fast golfs.

BUT...

Sorry to drag this back on topic but whether you want an older Mk5 or a new Mk6 is up to you. You could find an excellent Ed30/Pirelli and I would say get that but if it is standard Gti vs standard Gti... then I reckon the Mk6 is worth the bit extra. Whilst people on here will argue that the Mk6 is actually a Mk5.5 or whatever.... it is pretty clear that everyone thinks it is at least some improvement over the 5... if just not as much as VW would market!

I'm (almost) a Mk6 owner and I call it a Mk5.5 - it's the Mk5 with many of it's shortcomings ironed out. What it's not is an entirely new platform, which every previous Golf generation has been. When I first had a look around one I commented to the salesman that 'it should have been like this when they first brought out the Mk5'. The Mk5 is still a great car though and as a second hand buy it's an absolute bargain compared to a brand new Mk6.

The 5 is an OLD model and the 6 is THE NEW model and is excellent whether it is a GTi, GTD, R. However, lower spec versions of the 6 look dire compared to the 5, I must admit.
Now as 'Kev me lad' suggests, let's move swiftly on, PLEASE.

you missed my joke there, Steve  -  you said opinions are like ar*e holes  -  we all have one but you said you prefer your own and then, in brackets, appeared the word 'undecided'  -  so I'm saying are you undecided as to whether you prefer your own or not? gets lost in translation!

Hmmm... this forum seems to get gayer and gayer every week!
Theres usually 1 particular person at the heart of it, but they don't seem to be involved this time.
The gay love is speading

Are you talking about Kev or Steve or both?
Owners of GTis, GTDs, and Rs should all contribute.
Being reasonably inclusive and a bit less exclusive makes this forum worthwhile.
Otherwise, it will become as boring as this thread. :lipsrsealed:

that is good coming from someone with 722 posts... 719 of which are in the mk6 section!

still banging on about mk5 and mk6 crap, any chance we could move on ?
:sick:5.0 , :embarassed:5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5.9 :embarassed:, :smug:6.0:smug:.
I am getting a Mk 6.0. Yipee!
I have a mK6 GTD and its brilliant now, starting to loosen up a bit  gave it some welli yesterday down to Portsmouth!! The DSG just needed some Zip by useing the paddles & sport mode on the ACC, its very responsive now!! The GTD rules

Interesting, I have to say I prefer the mk6 GTi to mk5 GTI in the looks department, well except for the nose; I still prefer the front of the 5 GTI to the front of the 6.  Don't think I'll get many takers to that pov here but never mind.  Still very nice

But, I think a cooking model mk6 looks much better than a cooking model mk5, nose and all.  Sorry to be disloyal to my clan but there it is

Couldn't agree more...
There always has been the occassional bit of banter in the threads, but usually its about the topic in hand.  Now there seems to be a few folk who want to get the highest post count they can by replying to everything with drivel!  I'm sounding like an old boring fart, but it gets tedious when every thread ends in gay innuendo... and makes it difficult to find genuine info.
If you want to speak sh1te to each other, then put it in the general forums
