Title: mk6 MPG....
Post by: richellis1974 on 11 March 2010, 15:37
Hi all!!!! having decided the MK6 GTI WILL be my next wheels....are the new improved MPG figures attainable???? Obviously the more you boot it the less MPG but OVERALL are the MK6s less thirsty than the MK5s??????  Thanks for any info, Rich...

but OVERALL are the MK6s less thirsty than the MK5s?

^^^Yes, it'll be more efficient than a MKV.

are the new improved MPG figures attainable?

In both opinion and experience, no. However, I've been pretty consistent in my last 3 cars/6 years in getting about 5-6mpg less than the overall government 'combined' figure...

I'm averaging about 27mpg in the MKV, mainly short, cold runs. I reckon 30 will be easy enough in the MKVI.......... anyone like to correct me?

I average 28. I see 30 if I drive like my dad, 26 if I use the power a bit.

The MK6 has 10% better fuel economy than the MK5.

Better still get the GTD, if its MPG your after!!

53 on motorway, 35 around town!!
Title: Re: mk6 MPG....
Post by: GolfTi on 11 March 2010, 16:47
Yep. 10% better is about right.

I can get 44mpg on a slow journey say 50mph with few stops.

25mpg when I'm in the mood....

Average so far is 33.

^^^ See what I mean? About 5 off the published numbers!  :smug:

Yes,  but if I drive it like a granny all of the time then the published mpg is easily achievable. But then what's the point having a GTI??

Yes,  but if I drive it like a granny all of the time then the published mpg is easily achievable.

^^^ You've just told me your average is 33. That's not the published 'combined' mpg and TBH, I don't think it is easily achievable at all...

...But then what's the point having a GTI??

^^^ Therein lies my point. F00k sake, bank on 30mpg average and enjoy your car. Those obsessing over consumption should buy a GTD.

thanks for all the input guys!!!! GTD is OFF the menu!!!! i have a BMW 120d at the minute and its BRILLIANT for a diesel, real linear power delivery and really quick but i want a REVVY, blown Petrol back!!!! i had a MK5 GTI and honestly struggled to see 25mpg.....without driving like a loon ALL the while. I just wondered whether the MPG stated on the MK6 was within reach!!!!

I don't get it

Why buy a 'fast car' and then worry about fuel consumption?

The GTI is a car for petrol heads and boy is it s**t off a shovel fast?  For those who worry about burning fuel the GTI isn't for you

Call me old fashioned, but if you want to get a hot hatch, why are you discussing mpg?

I agree with the first part, but even coming from a 140hp TDI Eos I was ever so slightly disappointed with the power of the stock car. The Revo'd engine is a different matter

The GTI badge always stood for good all rounder, that includes MPG.
So yes MPG does count.

Oh and i suspect like the mk5 GTI the manual does 10% better mpg than the automatic DSG.

you see i DONT agree that "MPG doesnt matter". The MPG was SO shocking on my MK5 GTI that i may as well run an R32 with its AWD and V6 sound......trouble is that MPG on turboed cars is such a red herring coz the "official" tested figures are achieved off boost, ie driving like a granny.......MPG is NOT my MAIN concern, but i expect to see something CLOSE to the official figures, UNLIKE my experience with the MK5 GTI. The significantly recuded road tax would suggest it is less thirsty than the MK5.......but ive also heard the MK6 is SLOWER on the 0-60 dash.......DISCUSS??????

Don't think anyone is obsessing about mpg, just discussing and comparing as per the thread title. I , like others sometimes check a journey for mpg - no harm in that. I also have plenty of fun and don't give a hoot about the petrol most of the time.

Then your imo looking at the wrong car theres not a huge difference and if you were unhappy with your mk5 a couple more mpg here or there is not going to make you happy.

well snoopy....how come BMW can put a 6 cylinder 272bhp engine in its latest 330s and it returns close to 40mpg yet VW cannot get a 207bhp(admittedly turboed) TSI engine to return better then 39mpg combined????? in these ECO obssessed times why are manufacturers not working on their petrol engines and getting those to return better MPGs????? not everyone wants to spunk a FORTUNE lining the oil companies pockets, yet we do not all want a non-revving Diesel lump either.........
Title: Re: mk6 MPG....
Post by: GolfTi on 11 March 2010, 18:48
Even driving 'normally' there will be big differences in mpg depending on the type of journey you normally do, the type of fuel you use (95 or 99RON) and the type of gearbox you have.

For me, I'm happy with 33mpg on average. Mostly 30 minute+ journeys, 99RON, manual.

I get 40+ most days on my way to/from work. I 'save' this up and burn it all away at the weekend.

Buy the BMW then, i don't know any BMW that comes anywere close to its official figures.
As for the petrol engines in geneal companys are doing as you say they are producing small cc turbo engines with similar outputs to bigger NA units. The VW 2.0TSI is not one of these, the 1.2tsi is and the older 1.4tsi sort of. VW concentrated more on there TDIs its why bluemotion models are mostly TDIs.

snoopy dont get so defensive man!!!!! i LOVE the MK6 GTI!!!!!  30 plus mpg is perfectly acceptable to me!!!!!!! the BMW 3 series is NOT the type of car i wish to own!!!!!! M3 maybe......but i expect more than the 19mpg i frequently saw on 99octane fuel in my MK5!!!!! which brand of juice tends to get the best MPG out of the MK6???????????

Im not gettting defensive im just saying if you believe the figures you quoted for the BMW are real life and its what you want go for the bmw..
That pedal on the right stop pressing it so hard.  Learn to drive smoothly. Turn off the engine in a que of traffic thats what that key thing does  19mpg its something your doing. Ours use to do ~30 in my hands on daily commute into town our lasses hands 33, The DSG at work was 3mpg down on whatever i got out of the manual, so its something your doing to get 19mpg.

Also how are you measuring this? Are you using the brim to brim method. Computers lie and guessing is fatal.
Also was the car standard.

yeah mate car was standard, brim to brim method yeah. i suspect trip computer was faulty but it was a great car.......cant WAIT to get a MK6..............really cant.

I've got a complete petrol record for my car so far, I'll dig it out - it's about 32mpg though.

I don't drive like a maniac most of the time, but what I just love about the GTi is the overtaking.  The road I drive most often has quite a few decent overtaking opportunities if you're stuck behind a slowcoach, but it depends on having the power to take the chance.  That's where the DSG comes into its own.  I don't even have to think about changing down, or what gear I should be in - just see the chance, put the foot down, and bye-bye ditherer.

I'm getting poorer economy in the cold weather, presumably because the engine is running cold for longer.

Rolfe.

I always view MPG figures as a good objective way of comparing different models, rather than wondering whether you will actually achieve any specific figure. The difference between the 2 figures is likely to be realistic as you are comparing like with like.

EG If car A is quoted as 38mpg and the equivalent figure for car B is 30mpg the you can reasonably assume that you will use a fair amount less petrol if you buy car A.

If you're as sad as I am, for an estimated annual mileage you can work out how much you will save on fuel costs.

Strangely, over about 3 years ownership the extra purchase cost of a GTI over a F***s ST is about the same as the saving in fuel  costs!

My Mk5 GTi is averaging 32mpg according to the trip computer. I have achieved 42mpg on a run back from Cornwall. Not bad given it's a 2.0 Turbo.

My MK5 is fantastic on petrol. I can get 30 easily if I drive normally, consider its modded aswell, im chuffed with it.

Exactly so to get 19mpg like he says its got to be his driving or a petrol leak

38mpg on motorway is easily doable, 70mph
40+ mpg at 50limits,

And im remapped :S
Title: Re: mk6 MPG....
Post by: R32UK on 12 March 2010, 08:05
31mpg - Most of my journeys are short blasts but usually hampered by traffic.

40+mpg - Have had this a number of times when in slow moving motorway traffic.

22mpg - A blast on the way home (a + b roads) will often get me this figure.

I find that if you really want to blast your car then low 20's is what you will get back. However if you want to poodle around the high 30's to low 40's is easily achievable.

p.s. I am also remapped

There are several things...

- the instant consumption can say up to 200 mpg but that doesn't really give you an accurate average consumption.
- on the road I average about 32-24 mpg a tank (but this combines driving in and out of the city everyday and also the obligatory thrash now and again)
- on journeys I can get up to about 45 -48 mpg but more realistically i'll say 40-43 mpg.

I do drive like a granny though
