Well, what do you think? Please bear in mind that I've never attempted anything like this before :undecided:
This is what the wheels looked like at the start First job was to let the tyres down
(http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx247/GOLFMK111/P2190006.jpg)
A whole load of sanding later
(http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx247/GOLFMK111/P2190007.jpg)
Then came the masking up
(http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx247/GOLFMK111/P2190008.jpg)
5 coats of primer with sanding in between each coat
(http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx247/GOLFMK111/P2190009.jpg)
Then 5 coats of Range Rover Storm Grey Metalic
(http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx247/GOLFMK111/P2190010.jpg)
Then I added my new centre caps & Decals (personnel taste )
Then I sealed everything with 5 coats of Lacquer & voila!!

look nice, liken the wolfsburg centres
-
Nice job, the wheels suite a darker silver. Not a critisism, more of an observation, how much better would those "Volkswagen" decals look if they had a little curve to them, so they follow the line of the rim...
Thom
-
To be honest, the pics don't do em justice, they are really quite dark, and believe it or not, the decals do have a curve, but they're for 17"&18"wheels to be put round the rim, I think the curve would look much better on that size wheel as it would follow the contour alot better
Thanks mate, praise indeed
-
a good job done their matey, i like
id loose them stickers i think, but either way, a good effort their man
-
Apart from the stickers, excellent :afro:
-
Looking nice but gotta agree on the stickers, but as you said if you like them and the pictures are not doing amazing justice.
-
looking good
-
some good work put in there and they do look good spot on :afro:
-
Lovely job, I really really like the centre caps. I DO like the sticker, although I agree they would be better with more of a curve. Great first job, quite inspiring really. As I fancy spraying my wheels.
-
Thanks for the comments chaps, I'll post some more pics up over the weekend when I finally get them on the car!!
-
like them mate, looks a good job (my dad was a custom painter )
and i'd keep the sticker just to be diffrent.
-
nice job mate i like might give mine a go
-
I gotta give you 10/10 for effort there mate, they look spot on. I personally don't like the centre caps or stickers but regardless the wheels look awesome!!
-
think they look great. well done!
Was going to do the same afew weeks ago but got myself a set of 16" rims for a bargain with good tyres so the idea got chopped.
Still might do it tho as I'm keepin the 15" longbeech rims for winter wheels
Hmmmmm thinking
-
where can i get the wolfsburg centres from?
-
Yeah i like the centres too!! Good jopb on the wheels mate!! Lookin forward to seeing a pic of em on the car!!
-
flea bay do them they do sh!t loads
-
Good job, proof that you can get good results from rattle cans.
Will need to get som piccys up of my wheels, painted one set only 4 more to go
-
where can i get the wolfsburg centres from?
As rsmithone said, I got them from Ebay, think I paid £5.00 for all four!!
Will get pics up of them on the car, once the bloody rain stops and I can clean her!!
-
i saw them becus ive got to get some new bbs ones as the last owner painted over them have you seen the transformers one lol
-
what size do i get? its in millimeteres.
-
Very tidy!
I think the wolfsburg stickers give the standard alloys that personal touch ;)
Didn't you do the lip of the rim though?
-
Looks good mate
-

If your putting them on standard Longbeach Alloys, 55mm is the size your after

I see what you mean, yes, did paint the rim, the 'rough' bit you can see in the pics is part of the tyre, I didnt want to clean the tyres off right down to the rim until I had pumped them up fully and put them back on the car.
-
what grade/level of sanding paper did you use?
-
SANDPAPER
For the initial sanding down, I used 800 grit, then, after each coat of primer was applied, I gave it a light 'key' with some 1200 grit. I did NO sanding between the coats of colour, JUST between the coats of primer.
Hope that helps!!

You're better off with wet and dry paper.
I don't know anyone who rubs down between primer coats, should be smooth before you start painting anything.
It's all in the prep.
If you can find 2000grit with a bucket of Fairy liquid for final rub down you will be laughing.

Having a lil blonde moment!!!
Have used grey primer and have chosen volks satin silver from halfords to hopfully match my rs6's?
Anyway am worried that as the primer looks dark and when I spray the colour on it it will appear darker than it actually is and then its OBV that I have done it myself as the colour is gonna be damn sight darker than the colour it came in. M8 also has tried the reflex silver and was too dark but as it was only a little dent to repair then it didnt matter

in the middle of refurbing my alloys, will post up a tread as soon as its done....had a bit of a set back when i dropped the alloy on its face just as I was putting it back on the golf...Thing is the paint seemed as though it wasnt fully hardened, seemed a bit soft, it was dry to touch and was at least 6 hours since the last coat of laquer was put on....Learnt my lesson as had to go all the way back to the start as it was badly marked
Long story short how long should you wait before you put the wheels back on the car?

Depends on factors such as type of paint used ambient temp etc. General rule of thumb is not to drop alloys on there face in first place
Seriously though can take a few days/ weeks for paint to cure completely
-
Got a pic of these fitted yet??
-
Taking pics tomorrow, will post up then
-
good job, seen one of your cranes today in weymouth :)
-
OK, finally got round to a bit of cleaning today, so here are the wheels on the car (along with some other new bits )

What do you think
-
Everything's good, but I think there's too much "halfords-style" crap, like the "MkIII" badge, "8V" and aftermarket GTi badge.
A bit over the top with Wolfsburg stuff too, imo.
Otherwise nice :)

Engine/Exhaust/Ride Height are all to be replaced in the next couple of months...............
-
Lookin good mate!! The only thing id change (if it was mine) is to lose the 8v badges and put the mk3 there, but lookin nice mate!! Wont be long before some scrote nicks those dust caps mind.
-
I like the effort you've put in, the front looks good but i'm not keen on the badges.
Also the wheels to me look a bit too much like primer, but that might just be the pictures.
I think the badges are a bit overkill but i much prefer the "factory tweaked" look myself.

Too many badges! less is more :lipsrsealed:

+1 way over the top with the stickers / badges

Why have the wheels re-furbed & then go & stick wheel weights on the out side of the rims  :smug:.I would have gone for the stick on inside rim type.
