For those thinking about retrofitting a set of LED rear lights, I just sold my stock lights to a TDI owner for £150.
Total cost therefore was £380 (LEDs sourced in Germany, adapter cables, OBC reprogramming by dealer) less £150 = £230
...and the best part is that my wife hasn't noticed
A quick reminder of the end result:

Getting £150 is a pretty sweet deal. Did you just ebay them ?
-
is it hard to fit the LED lights ??

I did try them on eBay, but there was little interest so I put them on another French classifieds site and found a buyer in Paris quite quickly...
Fitting them physically is a piece of cake (not even a 15-minute job). The tricky part was getting my dealer to do the reprogramming (especially as I hadn't bought the lights from them). For more details, see this long thread from about page 30 onwards: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=131404.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=131404.0)

does the fact I have a right hand drive affect the process at all think i heard it cant be done if you have RHD ????

I don't really see why it would make any difference, other than the fact you would obviously need a set of RHD lights to ensure the reverse and fog lights were on the correct sides...
-
No its no different for RHD all you need is the RHD inner lights (so the reversing light and the foglight are on the correct sides)
SteveP's how too: http://mk6.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=81.0

I also sold me via ebay, also to a GT owner but for £5 less than the Frog

Thanks. I must admit that when I see other Mk6s on the roads now, especially ones with the basic bright red lights, I can't help feeling they look really old fashioned.

I'll 100% agree with that. Just cant afford to take the plunge for them at the moment or I would have. Darn holiday to pay for this year too so gotta split the spare cash for that

Hang on in there, Kev. Holidays are for the whole family, whereas these LED lights are a selfish and totally unnecessary acquisition for car-nerds like us

I'm not trying to put you under any pressure you here, but if you're thinking of selling your stock lights to offset the cost of the LEDs, bear in mind their market value is going to fall quickly as base model Golf owners get to hear about the LEDs... That's one of the reasons I did mine now. Now lie awake in bed at 3 a.m. and think about that

SteveP is probably too modest to post a link to his own thread/forum, but here is THE reference on retrofitting LEDs: http://mk6.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=81.0 (http://mk6.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=81.0)

Honnestly, if you know what a screwdriver is, then you can fit them yourself. Armed with SteveP's code, my dealer took 10 minutes to recode the OBC to avoid the error messages, so I would have thought 'labour' would be just a few quid.

Im getting tempted just have to go camping this year instead of abroad! sure the missus wont mind that I have blown our holiday money of some new LED lights  has anyone got any images of LED rear lights on a red GTI just so I can convince myself that doing the washing and ironing until December is going to worth it! at least I can drive to a camp site
