hey need some medical advice the 6 is running pants it splutters got wee bit of back fire and does this all through the rev range. i have tried to clean the maf but hasn't made the slightest difference..any ideas anyone
-
checked ya spark plugs?
checked for air leaks?
not sure if it has one, but crank sensor?
-
Common problem on the VR is plug leads (my dad went through two sets)
Or coilpack if it's an OBD2
-
would start with leads, plugs and coilpack
-
is the coil pack easy to remove?
-
hi mate try this link
http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/VW/MKIII/VW_MKIII_VR6_Coil_Pack_Fix_DIY.pdf
hope that helps

what year is it mate? Does it have a distributor on the end of the head, or a rubber block where the plug leads come out of?
If its a dizzy (obd1) then the coil is bolted under the wiper panel, can see it wi the bonnet up, only 2 screws hold it on I think, and the other kind (obd2) is a proper 6 way coilpack bolted to the rhs end of the head.
Here is a great write up on that maf (well its the audi S2 one but identical to the obd1 vr6 maf) to test it and see how it should be cleaned, great pics too.

The hoses are rubbish and do split esp. on the breather side underneath where the oil collects lol
The early vrs have a rubber inlet tube thats good, but the later ones are plastic and they crack sometimes, letting in un-metered air.

Before doing anything get the codes read....might help point you in the right direction.
-
+1 - first place to start if you can. Makes life easier knowing where to start looking mate.
-
just want to ad that the only does it when its warmed up to runnin temp
-
if pressed for a quick stab, id say MAF or ECT sensor - either can cause weird fuelling issues that seem to occur with a temperature connection. Mine used to run fine cold, then would lose power and backfire as soon as it hit 60oC on the MFA oil temp, plunging bucketloads of fuel down the exhaust. 19mpg at 40mph it was doing!
The MAF showed "short circuit to gnd" fault, I replaced it, hey presto. 33.5mpg at 65mph and only backfires now on the over-run, as I have a decat pipe....
BUT you need the codes scanned first.
