Hi
I was a mk1 boy but i've been converted to Mk2. No reason just fancied a change. Why not hey.
Anyway having picked up a nice Oak Green 16v, I have a few question.
1 - Cant you get a gear linkage replacement kit like the Mk1 one?
2 - Is the head light switch on the dash suposed to light up
3 - The silver trim is my dash is a bit worn and I want to replace it can it be taken off and replaced easy ?
Cheers
Allan

Not sure about the first one mate, The 2nd question however, No the switch does not light up for some reasion.
As for the 3rd, the interiour is pritty fiddly, Best going to a scrappy and ripping appart a dash before you risk damaging yours :-\
-
do you mean a gear linkage repair kit?
my switch lights up when the igniton is on.
-
1. Yes you can get a full kit from http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkage.shtml
2. Yes it is, when the ignition is on]
3. Not sure how easy it is to remove, if you have a scrappy near you try doing it there first! Seen some on the yank forums who have painted theirs red, looks pretty spiffing :D You can buy chrome trim from Halfords too, on the clubGTI forum a guy called 'RichGit' used it when he retrimmed his door cards.
His car is... 'subtle' ;)

3rd Q - just rub it all so that it becomes black instead of silver. looks far better
-
Thats a good idea, All black would look good!
-
go to german and swedish to get a bush repair kit about ?6 and a ball socket part that goes under the gear lever, got to vw and buy a weighted shift rod for a mk3 which is the same dimensions and only cost about ?8 for a vag part! that should sort out the gear thing, worked fine for me,
the switch should light up as everyone else said
and never done the third one but cant be too hard, i'd have a play in a scrap yard before you butcher your dash.

As rubyjonny said, the red is very good... It impressed me......

I also did the heater dials, but thats optional... Looks far better with red...

im in the process of doing mine white :D

WOOW
Top response cheers guys
I Think I'll be getting a new linkage kit and Mk3 rod thing
Head light switch, very strange ! I'll get a new one and try it.
As for the dash trim looks like a trip down to the scrappy and hope there's a Mk2 there that I can destroy, might even get a headlight switch ! ;)
Thanks again
;D ;D ;D

Oh yeah, my headlight switch doesn't light up anymore, but it took me a long time to notice....
-
you can replace the bulb in the headlight switch. and its a b!tch to get the chrome strip off part of mine was missing, its attached with plastic lugs about an inch long that have been melted inside the dash which is a bout an 8th of an inch thick so there is loads of stuff holding it on, comes out in pieces and you have to glue the new one on. easier with the dash out

The ones on the American spec cars come red from the factory. Under trays are different too.
-
whats different about the undertrays? for curiosity sake!
-
The undertrays are shaped different and padded to keep you from bashing your knees under the dash in a wreck. look like crap in my opinion. My folks had two mk2 jettas when i was in my teens and i had a mk2 jetta turbo diesel (all of 70 hp) and an 85 8v gti. The Golf had seat belts attached to the doors in the front as well which was a real pain in the ar5e. I wound up putting seatbelts from a jetta in place. Lot's of little differences between the American ones and the UK spec ones.
-
the seat belts that you cant not put on cos you have to get in behind it sort of thing? and yeah the americans like big gay indicators in their wings! ;D
-
Those are the ones. lol. Hated the bl00dy things. I took the indicators off of the wings and filled the holes. Went through inspection with zero problems. I miss the air con though. lol.
