Title: secondary air pump
Post by: dhorsfall2000 on 09 March 2010, 13:45
Hi, at what temp should my secondary air pump kick in, at the moment it starts almost every time I start the engine even though it has got a bit warmer weather????

It sounds like its gonna take off and is very embarrassing.

SAI will come on when the car starts from cold, whatever the weather.  Its fitted to warm up the cat converter and improve vehicle emissions.

Perhaps consider doing the rivet/bolt repair as it sounds like its split open to me.  That'll sort out the daft noise!

If the outside temp is below 4 degrees then the pump will not run. Anything above this and it will run for a maximum of 90 seconds after a cold start.

Read that post above mate, you sure you aint confusing it with the air-con pump?  Air-con pump doesn't operate below certain temps (ie 4°C).

SAI will come on all summer and all winter, at a "cold start" as it's there to warm the cat and 02 sensors up to operating temp (100s of °C)!

Done the mod mate. Mine is quiet now, but it won't run below 4 degrees.

I have checked out my air pump and it doesnt appear to have pop rivets in it, also my air pump is at the top of the engine next to the air filter box.
