I have to say that having swopped from the DSG back to manual, IMHO the manual box is far superior, it's just so much more engaging

The standard wheels are also fine, suit the black car well, better ride quality than the 18's, but wouldn't look so good on most other colours me thinks  :undecided:

The 17s for some reason always look smaller on photos than they do in real life imo.
DSG you just opened a huge can of worms  I regular compared mk5 GTI DSG to a manual for the past 4 years i went for a manual for the mk6 as it was a personal choice.

Gotta  say I agree about the DSG.

I just finished driving a loaner GTD with DSG, an it aint all dat!!
In a week of driving it, I used the padels once, that was just to try them, if I wanted to overtake, I just booted it and it dropped a couple of gears like any auto does.

Glad I`m back in my manual GTD now.

Pretty little thing she certainly is with very dainty feet!
I prefer a size up whatever the dress colour. Looks more balanced and less top heavy!
I also like to manupilate them manually as they tend to have a dual personality anyway!

I'd rather drive a Tractor than a DSG.

You have made the right choice and by what I have read you know you have too.

DSG Rules...it is as simple as that...

In 2010 you don't poke a stick around in a hole anymore (if it is about cars).......all called progress  :lipsrsealed:
It is men's ignorance trying to beat an ideal curve worked out by computer....the figures prove it...and to be fair I do not see myself as a very skilled driver let alone a racing dude..

If you want to engage...use the flippers......closer than that towards a Racing car you simply can't get....

What is this DSG of which you speak - is it clockwork, or witchcraft?

I'd rather drive a Tractor than a DSG.

Kev, you can have both - it's called a GTD DSG.  :lipsrsealed:

DSG V Manual  - I've always had manuals so i thought i'd have a change and try thr DSG hopefully i will get on with it. If not i'll trade it in and swap for a manual.

Have fun.

Here we go again slating the GTD off!! I have just done 800 miles in the GTD DSG in a week and its nothing like a tractor, better than the GTI so stick that in your pipe and its faster!!!

Of course it's well established knowledge that the GTD is faster than the GTI - but it is still a bit tractory isn't it? I'm told that if you look behind the rear number plate there's a power take-off for ploughing implements.

The barman says " what did he say?" The scouser says "f**k knows.... something about a job!!

Steve:

On a very long journey the GTD will most probably arrive at its destination earlier than the GTi because of its better fuel consumption.
Therefore, it is the faster car!
I've just choked!

Regarding DSG: I think it is brilliant, but not for me. It is a matter of choice.

Your car looks fabulous!

Must come and listen to your Dynaudio setup once I have my car.

and, as stated on many occasions, the DSG is an awesome bit of kit but manual cars are for real drivers and therefore better.  example, was watching the start of quantum of solace the other day and mr bond is thrashing the fook out of his aston - and its manual.  nuff said

and, as stated on many occasions, the DSG is an awesome bit of kit but manual cars are for real drivers and therefore better.  example, was watching the start of quantum of solace the other day and mr bond is thrashing the fook out of his aston - and its manual.  nuff said

A guy goes to the Post Office to apply for a job.

The interviewer asks him, "Are you allergic to anything?"

He replies, "Yes, caffeine. I can’t drink coffee.”

"Have you ever been in the military service?"

"Yes,"  he says, "I was in Iraq  for two years."

The interviewer says, "That will give you 5 extra points toward
employment."

Then he asks,  "Are you disabled in any way?"

The guy says,  "Yes. A bomb exploded near me and I lost both my
testicles.

The interviewer grimaces and then says, "Okay. You've got enough points
for me to hire you right now. Our normal hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00
pm. You can start  tomorrow at 10:00 am, and plan on starting at
10:00 am every day."

The guy is  puzzled and asks, "If the work hours are from 8:00 am to
4:00 pm, why don't you want me here until 10:00 am?

"This is a  government job," the interviewer says. "For the first two
hours, we  just stand around drinking coffee and scratching our balls.
No point in you coming in for that.

i haven't driven it you're right, and i can imagine its a v good motor.  but having had lots of diesel's i'm just not a fan of them anymore.  plus consumption is not that much better than petrol (not the way i drive anyway) and its more expensive to fill up.  each to their own though!  and i'm sure it does sound better......but its not as quick and that's what counts

nah i wouldn't, as much as i'm sure its a nice motor, we have just got rid of an a4 3.0 quattro s-line diesel which is a sh1t load quicker than a gtd and a gti - and i still prefer a petrol (and smaller) car!

honestly when i read that yesterday i was p1ssing myself!  how can a taxi be faster than a proper car?!?

It's obvious - let me explain. Taxis have to carry three fat blokes (plus driver - also fat) home from the pub. This is where the GTD's Golf R-equalling torques trumps the weedy GTI. If you are skinny, ugly and thus alone, you might just keep up in your GTI. 2WD makes the GTD much lighter than an R so it must be faster still. So, not only are GTD's faster, they are also for popular people - hence why most are the vastly superior 5 door model. DSG gives you valuable extra time to talk to all your extra mates, without having to worry about all that gears thing. Although unrelated, I should mention here that farmers also have more friends than average.

In summary, GTI's are obviously for losers who (I am told) might enjoy 'driving' their sister. Unless of course you are female, in which case you look cool and beautiful and can I have you phone number please?

Ok, yes - I admit it. I have a problem... I'm a dieselholic. It's been 2 years since my last diesel. But I've been weak. I went to look at a Golf R last week and there was a GTD on the forecourt. I honestly thought it was a GTI, I mean it looks the same doesn't it? And then the salesman offered me the keys... I didn't know what I was doing. Oh that sweet, sweet torque. I'm ashamed  :embarassed: and confused. What thould I do??

The way I see it is its the GTI owners who are doing all the talking about GTD's. If I didnt know better I would think they were obsessed...

Not sure if your seriouse or sarcastic??? Get the GTD & then get a tatoo on ya arse!!

...no Kev...I am civilized....I am not gonna not ask where you are planning to put it.... :lipsrsealed:

Right over the top of my GTI badge on my car.  :lipsrsealed:

So we all agree the GTD rules !!

Definitely sarcastic . But in all seriousness, the GTD is a fine car and as it costs less to run, is a very smart choice.

Yes i agree , it is a fine car, but on here it gets slated , and people on this forum dont have a clue about the GTD. I think a lot of people are comparing it to the MK5 and its nothing like that!! Compleatly differant ball game IMO from the Mk5.

I have had loan cars mk5 diesel's and yes they are pants (tractors) Dont mock it till you have tried it out!! :smug:its good to be smart???

I test drove a GTD and a GTI for a couple of hours each - back to back.  I had no intention of buying either... it was just a way of comparing Manual v DSG.
I was very surprised by the GTD.  It had loads of torque and was still pretty nippy from 0-60.  The handling was good, but not as good as the GTI.  The GTI didn't feel much quicker, but there was definately something in it.

For me Diesel is always a second choice.  Its something you take if you HAVE to, rather than something you choose freely.  If I was doing 50+ miles a day, then a GTD would make sense.  I'm only doing 10-12 miles a day - so MPG isn't THAT important - hence I've ordered the R!  I've driven many diesel cars as I used to work for Avis - and I have to say the GTD is probably the best diesel engined car I've driven.  If they keep improving diesel engines at the speed they are just now, I might actually CHOOSE a diesel in another few years

I agree with you totaly, the mk6 gtd has come on heaps&bounds!! 2 years ago I said exactly the same as you. I have owned 5 mk 5 gti's over the years, and yes there is no fizz but there is much more torque. When on the m-way the gtd comes into it's own for a diesel car IMO it's a very very nice car to drive, sounds lovely with dsg box Is very throaty when going through the gears!!

what sort of mpg do you get out it steve? round town and long journeys. I heard the 170 ps diesel wasn't that good on fuel in the mk5.

The GTD needs more torque, have you ever tried to push a tank by hand ?

I spent 3 years and 80000 miles with the 170 diesel and is the only reason I choose the GTD, for the engine.
Having had two A3's in the last six years I felt like a change...I was tempted with a 123d but with the necessary options, it pushed 31k and another £110 per month. GTI's are great but so are GTD's. Cruise along at 80mph in top next to a GTI then floor it and the GTD aint left wanting. The A3 had DSG, its great, but flawed, specially when your pushing hard on B roads, tight bends and around roundabouts; I chose a manual this time and am sure I've made the right choice.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the tattoo Kev, although I'm not holding my breath......

When I feel the need for speed, I ride my motorbike, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, 0-100 in sub 7; fast cars are too expensive in comparison. The bike only cost £7500 (although with extras cost £9k)

around town 34-35 mpg on m-way at 75 mph 53 mpg !! It's a common rail diesel which is much better than the mk5 !gives you a lot less noise!

Love the car !!! I just got mine on the 6/03/2010, and did not have to pre-order !!!! decided on a golf gti last week and picked it up saturday.

In black too, and have just ordered the Lifeshine pdi kit.

I agree with you on the auto, maybe it was better on the MK V as the manual was poor between 2 and 3rd gear.

Have to agree with you there. If the manual does have a weak point, its the change between 2nd + 3rd, found the same thing in the R32 :undecided:

I've seen gazillions of reviews of the mk6 GTI and I've never read anyone mention this as a weak point. Never even heard it mentioned at all. Transitions between gears (no lag) and the gearbox itself I've heard being praised countless times.

Driving along normally I have never had any problems... but when on a blast 2nd - 3rd always seem to be the weak link. Have heard a  number of people mention this before I am sure. :undecided:
