hi there could any of you out there tell me when the cambelt ie timing belt be changed is it on mileage or time ,ive paid a deposit on one but have not got the manual for any information as its in the car,,,many thanks
-
4 years or 40,000 miles. Just had mine done about £450
The service tech said it tends to be the tensioners (changed at same time) that fail rather than the belt itself.
-
if you're anywhere near stafford or stoke audi, they are doing the change for £275 all in

I thought it was 4 years or 60k miles?

I was told 4 years or 60k too.

I had my cambelt & water pump changed a few months ago. The car is only just 3 years old and has less than 30,000 mile under its belt.
Had a discussion with the service guy and a VW technician about when it should be done next. Their answer was in 1 year !!! at 4 years old.
"Ye, but its only just been done......!" I said that was crazy  Is there a shorter interval after the cambelt has been changed?
-
There is no mention of having the cambelt changed at 40,000 miles in the service schedule handbook.
It says 120,000 and only recomends the DSG gearbox oil being changed at 40,000.
-
With such large discrepancies on this item "someone" (any volunteers?) needs to speak with VAG UK and get an official answer.
Oh well, I suppose I will...watch this space
I've just emailed them
-
4 years or 60,000. Mine was done late last year.
-
4 years or 60k is the widely accepted marker.
No harm in getting it done ealier of course :)
-
I take it VW can move the goal posts so to speak from changing the cam belt change intervals from those stated in their service schedule to a different ones?
-
Those who would err on the side of caution probably would go for 4 years or 40k miles, however, I'll be getting mine done next summer at 5 years and i'd guess I'd be on about 45k miles by then...
I'm on a totally standard set-up and I don't rag the ar$e off my car.
My old Hyundai Accent ( ) went seven years and 70k miles, without so much as a bl00dy oil change, so surely this Golf can go another year without this!
-
Mine will be 4 years old in June with around 25k miles so I would like to think it should be OK for at least another year, also what are your thoughts on changing the DSG gearbox oil at this low mileage, would this stretch to another year?
-
^^^ Dunno, I'm still in the last century - I move the gears myself!
My guess would be no, get this done, but any DSG boys could help here....
-
Cam belt not sure about , am in the same boat
4 years and 14000 miles ??? But dsg get the oil changed . I
ask about dsg on here and all said change the oil
-
Jesus, do you drive your car or just push it around? :D
-
This old chestnut
I will be changing my cambelt this year (5 years / prob about 50k miles). I feel 4 years is a bit premature.
That said there are quite a number of GTI owners (ED30's especially it seems) who have had a chirping noise which was solved by changing the cambelt - often under warranty. So there may indeed be some weakness. As said I think its the tensioners that start to fail rather than the belts...
I've yet to see anyone here or other forums who had a total failure though.
VW seem to regularly do offers for getting the belts done for ~£300 so shop around.
Happily 5 days after getting a quote for £540 for changing the belt, I got a voucher for £299 though the post
-
Where did you get the voucher from and how do you find out when the offers are available?
-
It came though the post from the local stealer.
Its worth a cheeky ask at your dealer, if not you could see if you can get a cheap quote from somewhere and get them to price match. It has to be from somewhere using genuine parts though...
-
When I brought my GTI (from a main stealer) I got a years extended warranty, it runs out in November. Would this cover the cambelt, and water pump change? Its an 05 plate, and its done about 50k miles, and I believe its one of the first batch of engine numbers the AXX ones (hope thats the right code). And do I need to listen out for any kind of rattle or knocking noise?
Sorry if I have stolen this thread.
-
There's a similar thread on MkVgolfGTi.co.uk, and a few of the members are using other VAG group dealers..
One guy uses a local Skoda dealer because it's cheaper and uses the proper bits! :afro:

Warranty does not cover items that degrade through wear and tear - so no, the cambelt and water pump are not changed through warranty.
-
4 years or 60k miles is my understanding.

unless its arguably premature, mine was shagged at 25k and the dealer agreed that was not right and did it under warranty. At 50k its not likely to be done under warranty though.

Finally an answer from VW:
"Our Technical Team have confirmed that the recommendation for the Timing Belt replacement is 120,000 miles or every 4 years, whichever comes first. If the water pump was to fail at a later date the same workscope would have to be carried out as for the
replacement of the belt and so, it can be cost effective to have the water pump replaced at the same time as the belt."
