i bought a 16v the other day
replaced pads and discs today and the wheel weights (stuck on ones)
are rubbing on the top of the caliper  .
should i get the weights refitted or file on a little bit off the top off the caliper.
the brakes are 288,s

Sounds like you might have aftermarket alloys?
Bit of a problem if you can't have the weights on the outside of the wheel..then a lot of people prefer them tucked away out of sight in the inside rim (me also)
Maybe a thinner weight, of the same..err..weight! might give you enough clearance..
I had a similar problem and ended up using 5mm wheel spacers to get around it..not sure if it's the same in your case though..
Let us know what you do..

the car has the stock gti wheels on it and the weights are
on the inside. replacing the disc and pad has bought the
caliper out enough to rub on the weight it only just touches.
but sound the a old train when driving

you could get the wheels re - balanced. and get them to stick the weights somewhere clear off catching.
Thats the best bet

I have to agree.....at least its not the wheels catching like many!
