Title: top fill rad

what do i need for a top fill rad conversion on gt1 8v. like rad, monuts, hoses, plugs,

Why would you do that?  The expansion bottle is in the system and positioned as is to allow the system to self-bleed and maintain the correct pressure.

yer that is why im trying to clean the bay up in the 8v there is so many cables wires and hoses just want a cleaner look.

pretty simple, main thig is you have to block off the connection on the metal pipe round the side of the engine where the lower hose from the header tank goes to.  can either weld this up, or use a short length of pipe with something in it to cap it off.
unfortuantly the pipe from a MK1 without a header tank wont work either as it has different connections on it.

When my mate fitted a top fill rad we blocked the pipe off using the old coolant pipe chopped down and with a wheelbolt in the end which we covered in sealant before we forced it in and tightened it with the original hose clips. Wasnt the prettiest thing but was nice and easy to make up

and what rad, also what do i connect the old wire to that used to go to header tank.

I think I was told to go for the mk3 Golf top fill rad from GSF, but can't be sure whether it fits or not as I just went for a standard one when mine got a hole

MK3 golf dont have top fill, what you want is early MK1 Golf GTI or scirocco for a direct fit one. I've seen beemer units used in the past also, get scrappy hunting ;)

as for sensor, you have to bridge the 2 pins on it and tuck the plug up somewhere, mk1 topfill rad has no sensor. might be able to find a topfill from a beemer or summat with a level sensor in it tho

If you can get hold of a mk1 top-fill radiator, you can actually dissasemble the "top-fill" part from it.. and mate it to a mk2 gti radiator quite easily! There's a guide on VW-Vortex or something for how to do it. This means you'd use the original mounting brackets and stuff and would provide better cooling.

Anyone on here gone down the beemer rad route? If so what model/year was it from or part number? Do they aid better cooling or is it just another alternative?
