My standard exhaust is starting to give up the ghost so I'm doing my homework on replacements while I try and save up some cash.
I'm after something that is as OEM as possible, not ridiculously loud and boomy and good quality. Have heard Jetex are good but loud so have been looking into Longlife systems and was wondering what peoples experiences with them were? Would they be able to replicate the standard exhaust or is it a case of picking which tailpipes etc you want from a specified list?
Who has one and how loud/quiet are they?
Any advice appreciated
Cheers

Jetex' are not loud, if anything could be less noisy than a stainless system.

No? Have read quite a few places that they were. Thanks for the reply on the other thread btw.
Just don't want any boy racer boomers.

Ive had longlife on a Mk2 before and it was ok, quality can vary from place to place best go see them and look at their work.
suggest you buy poly mounts for them to use rather than the jellyones they normally supply

I believe longlife are custom, I had one on my golf but it was LOUD. Driving with the windows up was a bit of a mind bender after about 10 mins
If you rang around you might be able to get some Db ratings from jetex and longlife on their quieter options
The longlife on mine had been fitted at some point in the 90's and was in perfect condition when it was taken off last year so they certainly do last very well

db raiting are a bit funny to get hold of
i rang round a few places for a price. but i wanted a garantee thet it would be not noiseyer than 98 db @ 1mtr for trackdays and only one would agree to that

Longlife are custom made and the company was started by some disillusioned Powerflow people. At that time Powerflow didnt really do stainless exhausts and again, quality depended on the individual site. This may be the case for Longlife too

VW do a long life version but not sure if you can get them now.
As VW BUSH said...poly mounts! Not nice when the flimsy rubber ones break and the exhaust drops off.
I got a OEM looking exhaust from europarts last week and it is very quiet.
Even with an oil change the exhaust note goes down so keep that in mind

To be honest I have a couple of stainless system and they were very loud and boomy.

i have a 'cat back' Longlife system on the mk2 VR6 (albeit without a cat fitted) and its quite loud. however its becoming more apparent that this car is not going to be the daily driver!
it seems to resonate through the entire shell at about 4500-5000 rpm. not that a v6 sounds overly chav.
-
You need to make sure they fit a decent size silencer in the mid section, most people go for just a back box after the cat which makes it loud and wheezy, you need a decent mid silencer to keep it quiet under normal use.
Mine has a small tubular mid section which keeps it quiet until you really wind it up
(LoL winding up a MK3 8v )

I have this stainless steel exhaust from jetex.

At idle (~775rpm) and >3000rpm is when it's noisy, between that range it's ok.
I have set off a few car alarms if the other car is parked directly behind mine.
TBH i don't like it much, and it's louder than i expected.
The fact it has a lifetime warranty is nice, but if i were to buy again i'd get the twin-pipe mild steel version. Its £40-£50 cheaper, probably slightly quieter, and will outlive the lifespan of the car.

I replaced my longlife with a £45 quid standard system from central auto supplies and its brilliant.
Still got a bit of a growl to it but otherwise very quiet, looks nice aswell with the polished tail pipes

Got any pics of that? Mines had a DTM on it since I bought it and I'm finally fed up of the constant boom in the car. I assume 45 quid was just the backbox?
-
I had one a it was very loud, however i beleive they can tailor it to the customers wishes, by adding another resonastor box and more wading.
-
I have one on mine - worked out cheaper than a full standard system from VW - I am pleased with it, although it took a bit of adjustment (particularly around the bumper apeture where they originally fitted it too close). It does also vibrate on the rear beam when the car is fully laden, so also worth ensuring they make sure it clears easily. I asked for a quiet system and it is quiet on the motorway and around town, but above 4500rpm makes a brilliant howl...

Bargain of the century, was for the whole system, came to about £48 quid with all fittings etc
-
still cant believe you got full system for that. I had to get second hand middle and front for 30 notes (for mot purposes only and it sounds crap and blows at the front all the time)
nice looking mk2 though.

I got trade discount and the girlfriend worked there delivering parts
It blows a little bit from the downpipe joint but thats because I drove of the drive and missed the dropped curb
-
Interesting reading this - thanks for the feedback. So general consensus seems to be stick with the original system then :undecided:

I definitely wouldn't go for a Jetex if you don't want a loud exhaust. I'm a fan of Supersprint systems, they sound very similar to the genuine VW system and i'd go for one again if a genuine VW system wasn't an option.
