Title: Tyres
Post by: starlingadey on 04 March 2010, 09:50
Going for a pair of mid range (Falcon or similar) for front of Ed30...am I forever banished from the forum or is it actually ok?? I'm assured they're fine and it's not like I go round corners on 2 wheels or anything!!

If your going to buy a GTI at least fork just that tinnnnny bit more and put some decent tyres on it PLEEEEEASE !

Forum tyres of choice are:

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's

Goodyear Eagle F1s

Michelin Pilot Sports

I've had 2 sets of F1s (GSDs and then Assyms) on my GTI using the theory of "if its not broken, dont fix it".

There are a million and one threads regarding tyres in the MK5 section, use the advance search tool to have a read if you wish.

I’m looking to get new tyres soon. I have the regular 17 wheels on my MK 5 GTI. Whats the tyre size I need to get?

And I know everyone says search the forum for the reviews, but I have and it is always the same thing "the F1's are the best" "no the PS2's are the best" "F1's don’t work below 6°C" “PS2’s cost too much” I just want a good all round tyre, that will work in the whatever the English weather can throw at me, and that doesn't cost the earth. I don’t drive at 1000mph everywhere, or go round every corner at break neck speeds. I use my GTI as a normal every day car, that I can sometimes, when the mood takes me, get to my destination a little quicker in

So with baited breath and fingers crossed, has anyone got any suggestions?

Sorry if this seams a little silly, and if I have stolen the thread, but I'm sure there are other people like me on this forum that just want a good tyre for their GTI???

TBH you cant go wrong with ANY of them 3 tyres that I have put in my first post. The Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's are also VERY reasonably priced. They can all handle the wet pretty well and as for snow, well no "normal" tyre will handle it "properly". The F1 GSD 3s I had were AWFUL in the snow.

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ offer reviews on any tyre you can think of, take a butchers at that website.

I have GSD3s and can confirm they are AWFUL in the snow :D

But thats usually half a day a year (apart from this year) so I wouldnt even bother factoring that in to your thoughts. In the wet they are outstanding, but they are also so grippy that fuel economy takes a big knock in all conditions.

As AlanD said, you won't go far wrong with those you mention. Just dont get the SportMaxx!

I agree. Im running on Falken FK452's on my fronts, and for the money they are a really good value tyre. Maybe I just dont put my foot down as much as you guys, but when using kickdown etc, or moving quickly in 'S' from standstill, I rarely get any wheel spin etc at all.

The only thing I don tlike about the Falkens is the lack of rim protectors.....

As AlanD says, don't fook around with cheapo see-you-upside-down-in-the-hedge tyres!

Just consider this: No matter how you drive your car or its performance, the only area of contact you have with the road is 4 small patches, each the size of a CD - That's all.

Asymmetric tread tyres are currently the best allrounders you can get. Vredestein and Goodyear probably offer the best.

....In my book, you are driving properly. Wheelspin wastes time and wears out your tyres quicker. Smooth progressive use of the right foot is the key to faster take-offs.

Personally I think that rim protectors are a bit overrated and don't offer that much protection in the real world.

Only thing I would say against the Falkens is they do benefit from a bit of heat in them otherwise wheelspin is a bit too easy, but strangely this doesn't affect the cornering.  After 10k miles still got 5mm on the fronts and 7mm on the back - but I guess a lot of this comes down to driving style.

To be fair, Falkens do seem to be well regarded as a slightly cheaper option. If you want to save a few quid, then I wouldn't slate you for it.

The difference between a good tyre and a very good tyre (GY, Vred, PS2) under normal conditions is marginal. However, the really cheap rubber can be lethal.

I'm sticking with the premium brands just for my own peace of mind.

Being in the trade we get some good offers on tyres, at the moment we are selling Pirrelli Pzero rosso's in your fitment at £96 each fitted. This is due to them having large trade discounts on at the moment. Suprisingly I have 4 of these on my MK5 GTi

Maybe find a pirrelli dealer near you (go to a wholesaler with fitting bays not a backstreet setup) and you should find someone giving a good deal on these tyres.

Falkens, nangkangs, wanlis etc.... all ditchfinders from my experience. Khumo's are dirt cheap but dont last 5 mins. Uniroyal rainsport2 are fantastic in all weather and last ages, hard to find sometmes though. always my 1st choice of tyre.

Is there any rim protection on the Sessanta? I'm considering these for my replacement fronts.

Tyres are like underpants: everyone has a favourite and normally stick with them. No skid mark jokes please!

There's also a lot of flannel about tyres, my Revo'd MKVI GTI had Dunlops which people slate, just replaced the fronts at 12K miles to the new Michelin Pilot Sport 3, can't tell a blind bit of difference TBH and I don't hang about.....

Handling isnt much difference, but my god, tyre noise is much better then the dunlops.

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's
Can't go wrong with these & for the money are spot on.Loads of mk5 owners use them inc me.

Can't tell the difference in noise, grip, anything. I know the Sportmaxxes get slammed but I think they're just as good as anything else. I had P Zero Rosso on the Scirocco, fooking shyte they were, squirmed around whatever pressure you put in them.

I have to agree with you there Stevo , the dunlops are noisy esp on my new Mk6!! Every time I buy a new golf the have bloody Dunlops on :angry. Only once did I get one that came through with Michilines on. Enjoy Steve

I curse that tyre test.  Done in the fierce heat of an Italian summer the results have no meaning for a typical British day.  I bought some F1's after buying that edition of EVO.  Good enough tyres on hot days in summer but terrible slippy hard plasticky things on cooler days and nights.  They also wear down too easily, mine are shot after 8,000 miles.

I'm trying some Vredenstein Quatrac 2's next.  An all season tyre.  Will report if they are any good or not.

The other issue I had with Goodyear F1's (on a 1.8T Mk4 GTI) was tyre noise. They were fine when new but once about 2/3 worn they rumbled so much that I was convinced I was in for a couple of wheel bearings. I replaced the tyres and hey, the wheel bearings had "cured" themselves...

Incidentally my Mk5 GTI is still on its original fronts after nearly 14k but will need replacing soon - how about Toyos ??

....Are you sure you're not running on some cheapo Chinese copies?

I disagree with just about every word you have written about them. I'm on my third pair and have driven them in some extreme conditions including a hard wet trackday at Spa.

^^ Yep, what he said.

Not had any problems with my F1s, cant fault them apart from in the snow, and tbh, no tyre is going to do well in that.

That would explain the red indian whooping coming from the front of my F1 shod car.
Can't wait to get rid of them.
