Title: NEW tyres
Post by: rsjm2002 on 03 March 2010, 21:43
Just want to say thanks for all the advice/arguments/debate that's on the site about the right choice of tyres. As a result, I have four new Eagle F1 Assymetrics and I'm £410 lighter. They certainly seem to be be far better than the worn Proxys and the now slick Potenzas on there already. Certainly deeper tread

Let you know how they perform on the way down to Devon on Saturday.

I have Goodyear F1s Assymetrics on my BM and they are brilliant. My BM is crap in the snow regardless of tyres

My wifes' GTI is wrapped in Conti SC3 (front) and will need changing in the summer. Does anyone know how Falken 452s compare?

Regards.

....Another vote for Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics. I'm about to buy my third pair. Vredestein asymmetrics have a good reputation too except they don't warm up very quickly.

Btw, I see you're from Bromsgrove. I went to Bromsgrove School (in the days before girls attended). Do they still wear straw boaters in the Summer?

It's weird red, they warm up slowly on the rolling road but they are grippy from the off on the winter days, great in the snow and certainly better than the goodyears through the winter in my experience.  I'm a convert, gone from ps2's to F1's to vreds and vreds are certainly my new favourite

....Vreds were my favourite when I raced bicycles but 18mm with 150psi is a different ball game!

I've been thinking of changing to Vreds but am very unsure about having the GY asymms on one axle and Vred asymms on the other. Tyre wall stiffness etc could action the ESP when not wanted. I'm doing a proper trackday with Hurdy at the Nurdleburgering in April (Nordschleife plus GP circuit) and don't want to be taking strange risks.

I had some random weird snatching moments when I had GY asymms and GY directionals mixed.

No Sir, they don't

Falken 452s can be had for under £65 here;

Pah!! No straw boaters anymore!? What's the world coming to!?

Ian Carmichael has very recently passed on but is an Old Bromsgrovian who would doubtless turn in his grave at such shocking news.

I've had vreds on the front and f1's on the back since october and I've not had one weird moment with grip or balance.  I really wouldn't be concerned.  Maybe it was an issue of mixing directional tyres and assymetrical??

I think Vred's are a pretty looking tyre (as tyres are :embarassed:)

....A BIG Thankyou! Both asymmetrics in your case, yes?

This means I can do it [and blame you if I'm a casualty on the Nordschleife!].

Anyone tries the new New Michelin Pilot Sport 3 yet?

http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/news/new-michelin-pilot-sport-3-ps3-232.php

Tread pattern looks similar to the GY F1 Assy?
I have found the F1 Assy to be brilliant in the dry and excellent in the wet. Very progressive on the limit.
The only problem is in the cold weather. They feel a little stiff until they get some heat into them.
In the snow, once you get going they are OK. Its juts getting going thats the problem!!

....Perhaps too soon to reliably know about the PS3's but they are being strongly promoted.

If there's snow on the ground I simply don't go out. So, GY Asymms suit very well. I was quite surprised just how well they performed in some truly extreme wet conditions I encountered in the last few months - Outstanding.

I've got PS3's on the front of a Revo'd MK6, they don't feel any better or worse than the Sportmaxx fitted from new which I know get slated but they've impressed me and the Michelins don't feel any better or worse.

I have dropped the pressures though, they recommend something like 40psi on the mk6???

Brilliant, Steve!

I'm sorry, Egbert, but you do sometimes come across as deserving such responses. Your views are very different to most other people here.

I have the new PS3's fitted all round - they replaced the PS2 Exaltos which were fitted from the factory.

They seem much quieter than the exaltos and offer slightly better turn in confidence.

The Falkens at £65 were quickly dismissed (there were too many mixed reviews), I then toyed around with the Vreds, but the PS2's always got glowing reviews and it was the wet performance that impressed me the most with the Michelins, so I went for the PS3's even though they were around £40 a corner more expensive.

The PS3 tread pattern looks nothing special, but did anyone see the program last night on imported tyres with virtually identical tread pattern of premium brands, but with a 17m increase in stopping distances in the wet!

Yeah I saw that, Fake Britain? They were testing on a MK6.

Some shocking finding.

Well, I say I watched it. I was in a cafe having breakfast so was sort of watching it :D

Im not sure if it was the same program as he said last night, this thing I saw was on in the morning.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rgh6s/Fake_Britain_Fake_Cars/

They also had an MKV R32 which had a fake service history which was bought on eBay and had 30k taken off the clock.

very interesting.

the guy at the end says to make sure you check the VIN matches the documents, but theres a whole segment at the beginning about cloning and how checking documents are faked, he never mentions this, so people who didnt see the beginning of the programme are none the wiser!

They were not fakes, just budget tyres with a pattern like the Continentals also tested.  My main conclusion was that the Mk6's brakes seemed a little feeble.

At less than 7C the Goodyears might be even worse than the budgets.  They never quote temperature in these psuedo scientific tests.

....I'm assuming you mean 7C external ambient temperature.

I use a TyreSure monitor which displays both pressure and temperature for each individual tyre fitted and updates itself about every 5 seconds. So I can report that independent of external ambient temperature, the tyre temperatures vary independently. All the external ambient does is influence the rate at which the tyres gain heat and that, in turn is influenced by your driving. Tyre temps are cooler in wet weather too.

Hurdy uses a TyreSure monitor too.
