How easy is it to get it recoded and anyone in the Hull area with vagcom ?
-
is that not the code on the sticker - ****? Mine just had a sticker like that as the code - no card like the auction stated
-
It will be that, they always stick it on the unit.

Isn't that a bit like writing your PIN number on your Visa card?! Anyhow, let us know how you get on with the install, Neil.
-
Neil can I ask who the seller was on ebay? PM me if you dont want to be public,
Also I'm in Leeds can do vag-com if no one closer...

You can pick it off before you install it!
I've blanked out my post with the PIN in it - just incase. That's what mine looked like though.

Questions Questions
Amp is under/infront of the passenger seat,
Dynaudio is one of the most famous speaker companies in the world who make some of the most often used studio reference speakers about and VW owners often spell the name wrong

Neil what you going to do with your old RCD510?
snoopy have you heard the dynaudio in the Golf? If so what's your opinion? I know you're in the know with car audio.
I know i have comented on this a few times on here in the past and i do remember a long thread on it. For the price and what you get i think its a good deal. No real bass below about 50hz, Ok midbass, smooth midrange, polite treble lacking true extension but very polite typical dynaudio sound. A nice polite tonality to it (some may say dull tonality) but has little to no real image and soundstage recreation. (Its the Iplop earbud generation so image and soundstage whats that!)
I do think us golf owners/soon owners got short changed compared to what passat owners get. (better midbass and better bottom end extension(due to 8" in the doors and aditional small midrange units). I also don't understand why VW did not go for a similar setup to what Dynaudio offer to Volvo cars as theres is far superior as theres has a sort of image/soundstage due to logic steering and a centre chanel/more power and an optional sub.

I agree.
There was no image or soundstage.
The sound was very bland with no bass extension.
The high frequencies were also a bit strangled.
I felt the system was not very musical.

Dynaudios have always been laid back and smooth thats there way, there studio monitors, pro, home systems are the same. They also show up the quality of bad recordings(mp3/massmarket tat) more than poor speakers.

I used to be a Hi Fi 'addict' and participated on listening panels.
Got quite a good system, both analogue and digital.
Prefer my Pink Triangle turntable with SME Series V arm to the high end CD player I have.
MP3 sounds rubbish. I simply don't bother.

Neil what you going to do with your old RCD510?
RCD510 up for sale once the sat nav up and running, any offers welcome

So are we of the opinion that £500-1000 spent on aftermarket gear is a better way to go? Or would it cost a lot more than that to better it?
I'm looking at used GTI's (can't face the wait on a new one!) and I had dynaudio down as a must have, a lot of positive reviews in other forums when I was searching last night. Would make life easy though if it's not *that* great, and can be easily matched with aftermarket stuff (although I do like the branded tweeters in the dynaudio setup  )
-
You can always better it for soundstage and imaging. For tonality? due to what will need to be changed and excluding fitting and materials imo bottom budget no, top budget probably, (worth the effort, depends on the person 99.5% would say no) depends what you define as better.
-
Snoops are you after an RCD510 ??
-
I do keep thinking about it, just cannot make my mind up :embarassed:

It is a cracking piece of kit if your not bothered about Sat Nav, prob let it go for about £250

Okay do you reckon £1000 spent on an amp and speakers in the existing locations get you better? Decent bass but a nice soundstage is what I'm after I'd say.
-
Nice to meet you Neil that is an awesome car you have, I forgot to check the rear view camera but I did turn it on so should be fine, hope you a safe drive home in this cra**y weather,
Any problems dont hesitate to get in touch mate.
Cheers
Darren

As it only does the first 4 digits of a post code can you enter the rest of the address to find the exact house or buisness, so creating a door to door route? :undecided:

Snoopy:
For what it is worth, I have looked around and checked where best to get the RNS 510 supplied and fitted. I have decided to go with OEM Retrofits. They will supply and install it for me in London for £600. They are very highly recommended. I am not looking for a cut price deal but one that is good value for money and involves as little problem or worry for me as possible. Obviously, at this price the units are not brand new, but you will have some difficulty to see any flaws in the finish.
-
Snoopy, from what i've heard (read) , Darren seems like a decent sort of bloke and he can supply and fit them.
-
Fittings not a problem  A reliable suppler on the other hand.
-
or Darren for that matter.
I did not get in touch with him as I was not sure whether he would do an installation in London on a Saturday.

I did not get in touch with him as I was not sure whether he would do an installation in London on a Saturday.
and the other reason was that he can have supply problems due to his popularity.

Good luck with that, I and various other members on here and other forums tried and failed to get hold of anybody from OEM retrofits. I'd give them a wide berth IMO

I agree Neil, got mine from eBay over a year ago. Paid £520 including delivery, came next day and was immaculate. Well worth the money, couldn't be without mine now
-
Agreed!! it would be close call if it was a choice between the RNS510 and the remap
I paid £700 for mine about 2yrs ago and its still going strong.. despite numerous fw updates, map updates, being swapped from the r to the gti.... so yes very durable units!

I rarely listen to music at loud levels in the car so I stayed with the standard hifi ...my 3 reasons
I want to hear what is outside happening (other cars, police/ambulance/fire etc etc)
I listen extensively at home so appreciate the quietness...
I simply love the noise of the Engine......
-
Erik:
Now I know why I love you!
Truly fabulous.
If only I spoke Dutch.
I may improve the sound in the car as I mainly listen to classical music, but I will do this myself with very subltle changes. Let's wait and see. Might even think the standard set-up is good enough.

I contacted OEM Retrofits several times too when buying my RNS and got no response from them either. I remember a heap of people being in the same boat - hence why I didn't use them.
I think I might buy myself a VagCom :undecided:

Hmmm... I'm only £2.30 more to do it on my own!
I'll just order one from Gendan once I get a confirmed date for my car.
-
Are you getting discount from Gendan? or are you just after the micro-can version for mk5 chassis model VWs only they have listed as £205? The one in the group buy is the Hex-can which gendan have listed for £263

I was just going to go for the Micro Can version. Apart from being compatible with older cars - is there a real difference?
I suppose getting something better for less money is probably a good idea though!
-
Easier to sell on if you need to i guess also you can help others out that don't have a mk5 based car. I have many family members running a few year old VW/Audi/SEAT/Skodas so the hex-can will be more use to me.
-
Added my name to the Briskoda forum, so once I get a PM I can transfer some cash.
I'm not really in a major hurry - as long as its here before my car so I can get my Sat Nav / Fiscon set up straight away. I'll also consider buying the cruise stalk and having a go.
-
Cool, is p3eps is buying one thats me sorted, he just lives up the road.

Once I figure it out I'll easily do tweaks for folk. I just got back from Canada this morning with $550 left over... so that'll pay for my VagCom!
