Title: Squeek on startin up.
Post by: FJmk289 on 03 March 2010, 18:10
Hi everyone, having a bit of trouble...

Got a mk2 with a mk3 GTi engine in it. I put a mk2 GTi gearbox on it yesterday (with flywheel driveshafts etc)and put it back together, but when i start it up there is a squeek coming from the started motor area.

If i give a pull on the belt it starts up with a squeek, but otherwise it doesnt start it just makes an awful noise.

I pulled out the flywheel and checked the teeth, one needed a bit filing off and since then its started everytime but still squeeks. but if anyone knows what it might be id appreciate any advice, i.e. is it something to do with starter motor?

Cheers guys
FJ

Try takin out the starter and greasing it where it winds out, try wiring it up when its out and see that it retracts easy. I just fitted a Mk4 engine to my Mk2 golf, and the starter was sticking when starting, a bit of grease and cleaning sorted it.  You will often find that starters won't retract quick enough, and thats what makes the noise. (I hope)  Starters that are lying idle for a while do this.
