Title: New discs and pads on the way
Post by: bobbarley on 02 March 2010, 20:58
Just recently my brakes have been getting worse, and worse, and worse.  Absolutely no bite to them at all, and I've had to start braking a lot earlier when driving as the stopping distance is noticeably further.  This is despite my front brakes being upgraded at Awesome a year ago to a 312mm set-up.  I suspect however it is largely due to the Mintex discs and pads I got fitted which, in hindsight, look fake.

These are the suspected dodgy discs I bought last year - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-TT-MINTEX-FRONT-BRAKE-DISCS-312mm-ALL-MODELS_W0QQitemZ260156974492QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3c9290659c

So have just ordered the following tasty treats from buypartsby!

EBC Premium Replacement Discs
EBC Redstuff Brake Pads

£137.99 for the lot delivered.  Looking forward to trying them out :afro:

Weird, I know Rhys doesn't like his either.

I'll fit them the weekend after they come, be nice to get my hands dirty, been too cold recently.

New discs and pads all round are next on my list to do - probably end of the month. Was going to put 312mm on the front and keep umming and arrring about these:

Think I am going to give them a miss and shop around and try and pick bits up individually to save a few bob. Will be good to hear how you get on with your replacements bob

I supplied the discs and pads to Awesome, cost £50-£100 to get them fitted, honestly can't remember which!  312mm carriers cost me £100.

So what was the total cost approx? And was it worth it? :undecided:

Upgrading to 312mm brakes is worth doing.  What's not worth doing is buying cheap knock off discs and pads!

thought id post this question in here rather than make ANOTHER brake topic! ....

Is this EVERYTHING i need to upgrade to 312mm brake

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-312mm-Brake-calipers-carriers-Discs-lines-pads_W0QQitemZ320499928488QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4a9f48cda8

Might aswell buy the calipers already painted. Also im gonna ask him to sell me it all without the discs and by them seperate, some drilled/grooved discs.

Also is that a fair price for the setup, links to any cheaper ones ?

Danke schön

Sorry scrap that, you don't even *need* new pads, it's just a good idea to get new ones if you're replacing your discs.

I bought those the other day mate - had them delivered last Friday but haven't had them put on yet as I need to get some rears done at the same time. Pay day Friday

Here's what I had delivered (again, didn't really need the calipers, but I am going to touch the paint up on my existing ones and see if anyone wants them). Pic doesn't show the pads (they are just standard EBC ones). I am contemplating selling the pads on and buying something a bit better now in hindsight  :undecided: Although I might just stick them on to see the difference the 312 upgrade makes.
