Title: URGENT Help Required ... Footwell Leakage!!
Post by: DubSociety on 28 February 2010, 13:59
Ive had a read of this after using the search function: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=88604.0

And im afraid to say, I have had those symptoms for about a month ... car steaming up really quick ...

But more to the point, only today have I noticed a nice puddle of water in the back passenger footwell and a little less of a puddle at the front ... Enough that a whole roll of tissue hasnt been able to fully soak up.

Lookin carefully, it looks as if the waters dripping from the central module -- I am absolutely terrified to think if I leave it for even another few days without sorting this out, with the rain expected this week my car will absolutely become f*ck3d.

So am I right, in thinking its the Pollen filter and tray on my MK3 thats gone?

AND

Has any one else had this problem, if so, what was the culprit, and any tips on what I should look at? its pissing down at the moment so I need to get out their as soon as ...

Might be worth getting it serviced and seeing if there's major rust issues underneath. Or just pull up the carpet?

Cars immaculate, had it fully serviced in Jan, and everything was ok...

Just removed the scuttle panel, and its nice & dry where the pollen filter is etc, ive just cleaned out the leaves etc. No sign of water their?

Where else should I be looking ... from what I can see it looks as if the water is coming from the footwell 'feet' heater blower area ...

Sounds to me like the heater matrix is leaking

Anyway to find out for sure?

My car heats up fairly quickly after driving for about 5-10minutes and the heaters run fine ... also, by the looks of it im not losing any coolant.

Hhhmmm. If your not losing coolant then not likely to be the H.matrix. You got a sunroof? maybe the drainage channels in the roof lining are blocked/come apart.

3 or 5 door, could be coming in through the door membranes.

Mines got a little hole (Amongst others) in the passenger footwell where it meets the inner arch so on wet days the carpet gets a bitt soggy also because of the sound material it never drys out and smells of mouldy feet
Looks like its curtains for ye olde tug this mot  ()

How do I clean the sun roof drain holes and how do I see a leak or locate the door membrane can you be a bit more specific as to describe exactly what I should be looking at -- thanks

posted the same thing about a week ago, but mine is only wet on drivers footwell, think ive cured it by cleaning out under the scuttle board which is the plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen. under this are drianage holes which can get blocked, mine just had tree leaves plastered over it.

Hi, yeah, thats the first thing I did ... scuttle panel was opened and it wasn't wet though, just covered in plenty of tree leaves so cleaned all I can -- their was no gunk/sludge what so ever.

Where are the drainage holes?

My leak is occuring in the PASSENGER FRONT / REAR -- I can see faint water drops as if the water has fallen through the centre console side where the air blowers for the feet are ... how can that happen? Im going to have a look at all the door cards/membranes soon and do the 'hosing' the car method while sitting inside to inspect where its coming from ... just need to find a sunny hot day and take it on the chin until then.

Any one have any other suggestions? And btw where are the sunroof drainage holes, and how do you guys 'clean' it out?

I have the exact same issue. I dont think its the sunroof drain holes. These holes are located near the door hinges and are a rubber tube with a kind of flared end. Poor water over your sunroof and here is where it should drain out.

As for the rear footwell, i think you will find the seal between the car body and rear lights is letting in water and it runs down the side of the boot ending up in the footwell. Water was also getting under the boot seal on mine too, so i pulled it off and filled the locating groove in the seal with silicone sealant and put it back, all fine.
