Just in the process of doing mine matey, what you need -
Sandpaper - 2 grades (Im using P150 and P180)
A Scotch Pad (Super fine abrasive pad)
A decent fine file
Masking tape
A newspaper (I find the Sport to be best so you can look at big fake breasts whilst re-furbing ya wheels )
Some meths and Some rags
Some filler (If your wheels have been curbed)
Some Primer, Your choice of colour paint and clear lacquer (I found Silver Hook Chemicals spray paint to be the best I've tried)

Before
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/VicksPicture24012010026.jpg)

Let the tyre down and remove any weights (Use a marker to mark the tyre where the weight sits so you can put it back on)
Use the sandpaper to rub down the wheel, use the slightly rougher one to get rid of any deep scratches or small gouges, if a scratch is very deep I used the file to 'Fit' out the scratch.
Rub down with the scotch pad (Gets rid of any small scratches the sandpaper may have left)
Once fully rubbed down (About 25 mins per wheel) Clean thouroughly with the meths.

Any curbed bits on the rim or large scratches you couldn't rub out you need to fill (Any body filler should do the trick)

Rub down the filler once set and clean again!!
Mask off the tyre and clean again!!!
Apply your first coat of primer, this should be a light, evenly sprayed coat, leave for 20 mins, apply another coat, leave for 20 mins and apply another coat, leave for 24 hours for the primer to harden (This is for best results, trust me)

Repeat with the colour of your choice

BLING!!!!!!!

And then again with the lacquer

Shazam!!!

I used etch primer because I'd gone back to bare metal in some places but most primers will do the job

I bought specific silver alloy wheel paint from Halfords. They do it in white and gunmetal.

Any lacquer will be fine

I'd like to spray mine white but not sure how it would look. I think black is more discreet.

Any lacquer will be fine

If you buy spray paint in Halfords, their lacquer is fine to go with it, not all lacquers are OK, some react.

You should also lightly rub down the primer, 1200 is fine for spray cans, I'd say 800 TBF though, any lower with rattle cans and it can show through. If you don't block down primer it can react a lot easier, you'll notice as it will simply peel off. If that happens, leave it to dry fully and sand back to bare metal and re prime in thinner coats.

Well maybe gettin some Early Vr6 BBS Alloys off my mate, but will need a slight refurb... the ones with the big BBS Cap which hide the bolts.

I was told these are quite rare now..????

anyway think i'll be refurbing these instead of the longbeach ones and spend alot more time on them :afro:

One big question..... We have a sand blaster at work.... is it a bad idea to use the blaster on the alloys... and why??

Cheers Christo.

Yeah refurb them white! thats exactly what im in the process of doing (only slarted sanding the lip) but the VR6 wheels with the centre cap. Isn't that the same ones as your doing Joe?

I don't know if they are but i picked mine up for £100 with 3 decent tires and a 1 bad one..there was no tire so that was quite bad :(

We want pics and lots of them!

Front calipers are yellow already, need to redo them and do the rears too.

Correct, I've just finished refurbing my early VR6 BBS's! Well tell a lie, I have one more to do, which I'll sand down tonight (takes fooking ages, why did they put the spokes so close together?!). I picked mine up last Thursday, with 4 brand spanking new tyres! Bonus!

I have all 4 centre caps too but I've ordered some carbon BBS badges so waiting for those to come before I fit the caps

depends on how fine/corse the sand is. if it's to thick then it will dent your alloy leaving it looking like a orange peal.

what is it used for? steel? I had to get some alloy blasted for my dh bike. one place I took it to said they wont touch it cuz there will be nothing left

Post by: christomk3gti on 01 March 2010, 18:15
I'll give up on the idea of sand blasting them just incase i screw them up lol...

Yeah there the same wheels i may be getting, all need tyres which i have on my longbeach ready :afro:

So i'm gunna give them a ruddy good refurb and hopefully have them in white. think i'l be very different but think it will look the nuts on the black golf :afro:

btw looking good Joe :afro:

Khare - Just do it and go for what ever colour you like..... :afro:

I want smaller tyres because the ones on there rub like a b!tch. Wanna swap them for 195/45's, but the tyres I already have are pretty much brand new so might aswell wear them down first. Burnouts anyone?
