Its more than likely the ignition switch thats gone if your having problems starting.

Mine cost something like £120 to replace.

The part was only like a tenner, but i paid an auto electrician to fit it, as i really have no idea and there is sheer bolts etc.

Meh.... fixed the problem!

Hammer and a chisel works well for shear bolts.

Probably, but i didn't want to break anything. If i ain't confident doing the job and i can afford to pay a professional i trust, then generally i do tbh.

the problem was i had to replace the housing that holds the ignition barrel as the race bearing was shot, the whole thing was only £25 from a vw dealer but getting the barrel out was a pain in the arse and ended up snaping the pin which hits the switch when starting, vw dealer wanted £75 for barrel but ive ordered one on ebay for £7 and hope to change the pin only and retain the og key, goes to show somethings from dealer are very well priced but others are stupid prices.

Best to lift the column out of its tube to get to the switch.. Much easier than chiseling the collar and having to replce that as well !!

ive only broke the tale end of the barrel and can be replaced so if anyone has a spare barrel kicking about they dont want let me know, i dont even need the keys!
