Hi, I am new to this forum and would welcome any info or help. I have a lovely old Golf (1990) which
even the guy at the MOT garage praises. A few weeks ago, doing about 60 on the M25 the accelerator pedal was suddenly flopping about with nothing on it, but the car just kept revving up and going. A hair-raising experience to say the least. My question is that I think it could be the linkage
from the accelerator end which is the problem and could it be that this should be greased? Because
of the bad weather we haven't been able to get it up on ramps yet to have a look. I know that the
cable runs from the accelerator to the gear box and then to the carb but the problem is definately at the pedal end and i am certain the gearbox plays no part. I am reluctant to part with the car as it drives like the wind and has been so reliable.
As the tax runs out end of March I have until then to sort it.

its possible cable has frayed thru and jammed, this almost happened on my GTI but luckily I cought it just in time! its a dead easy job to swap though, so I'd buy a new cable and work from there.
dont have to put it on a ramp ro do the cable either, its done from in the engine bay. cable goes into the scuttle area then out a hole in the front, so gotta pop off the plastic trim and pull it out that way.

I had a similar issue recently, and a new throttle cable fixed it perfectly and wasn't too expensive either
