Supercharger = sounds like a wheel bearing has gone.
Turbo...nice!
I have a mate with a 3.0 low compression VR6 in a Golf Rallye, runing 500+ BHP and through VW Motorsport / Gemini 6 speed, semi straight-cut, close ratio gearkit...and that re-defines how quick you thought a Golf could be! Wild...

VR6's sound awesome! fact.
+1 They are awesome
-
have to agree, the sound is fappin wicked as it goes thru 3k and 4k, unfortunately my mpg's drop to 20 - 21 when givin it a bit of poke, but god does it sound lush. The long throw shift is all that lets it down....
-
My God it's awesome, my insurance will start in one week!! I'm only 21 with 4 years NCB and guess what I'M DOING IT ALL LEAGALLY.... (£586 fully comp!!!) :)

dont spose it was me ? I have a viper induction kit on mine, i know it prob dont make it any quicker cuz of hot air etc but it sounds great under full throttle.. No need for a loud exhaust just fat induction noise lol... Im proper in love with my vr6 and returns about 30 to the gallon so over all very pleased, 180 k and strong as ever, no smoke, rattles, just perfect :-)

VRDan has an immaculate VR6 Highline, there is nout wrong with it cosmetically or mechanically, and the thing is a complete beast, love it when he puts his foot down, catch some Gs!
-
If you think a supercharger sounds like a wheel bearing, listen to a Bathurst VXR8...
that thing sounds like a rat with 3 legs freshly chopped off, and trying to run on its 4th....
-
I have to be honest, I keep looking for vr6's :lipsrsealed: always thought the 16v would do, but I want a vr6!
I'm now stuck with next car ideas. was gona get a impreza type r, but can't stop thinking about a mk2 rallye with a pokie vr6 lump
I'm thinking of selling the 16v for a vr6 and if I can find a blown rallye or a cheap one the peoject will start
-
Just a quick clip of my old vr on the rollers.....

Its the vr at the bottom left.

Do like the noise but the power for what it is, is pretty poor along with the mpg. But it wasnt designed to be a really fast motor.
Still very nice all the same :afro:

true but very easy to get more power from it.
-
The power at the time was considered good, early 90's hatches weren't that powerful compared to todays.

Agreed and quite easy to get to 200bhp with breathing mods.
-
yeah i agree, just with a 2.8 lump you'd expect alot more. where as your gettin under 2.0L engines nowadays that are running well over 200bhp. Technology has changed
But i DO like the Vr6 alot :afro:

Just remember though that most if not all these 2l lumps are turbo charged...bar the civics...and that bmw's 325i produced 190bhp with its flat v6 at the time.
-
I know that, i'm not dissing them at all. like i said i like them :afro:
just sayin there under powered as standard for what they are.

Have to disagree here.....but we'll agree to disagree.
-
at 1155kg and 174bhp its still 150bhp/ton.
feels pretty decent, even after a 200sx turbo, its not got the sudden rush of the sx but theres bags more torque so it pulls everywhere.
i find the revs decieving cos it pulls from 1k to 2k like other cars do from 2k to 3k then gets really strong from 3k onward. I can slow to 20mph in 5th, drive thru a village then press the pedal and pull straight to 60 in a few seconds without changing down, cant do that in many cars.
it feels lazy when the throttle is mashed, but all 6's and 8's do. then you look down, and your waaay into licence-losing territory.... lol
-
It's an N/A engine developed in the 80's, fact is they make more when dyno'd as proven by the vr6 owners club and the torque is still superior to some of these modern day 2.0L engines. I wonder how many of those new turbo lumps will make 200k miles? I know there are plenty of VR6 that either make it or get very close if well maintained.
Plus the noise turns me on, thats why i own a tuned VR6 :)
-
I never understand this bollox about them being underpowered lol They sound lush, they look lush what more do you need. 0-60 in 7ish seconds thats still very decent by todays standards.
-
LOL
Sound-Envy I think
-
worked on mine 2day,1 day closer 2 have it on the road
cant wait
-
when you floor it, and the wave of torque pulls you into doubke figures.....it howls like a werewolf at 3k. oh my god it is pants wetting!
the growl makes small children and Pug 106 drivers cry.
its awsome, theres no other word for it. next car is an R32 24v.....
-
Time is right. so buy one now ja. but make sure its in good condition... thats how my mk2 vr6 conversion started  mk3 body was f**ked

Twas a straight 6 24v, early ones were 172bhp, later cars 192bhp
-
VR6 was first released in 1992, good figures for the time.
-
The power at the time was considered good, early 90's hatches weren't that powerful compared to todays.
Agreed and quite easy to get to 200bhp with breathing mods.
Can some one lighten me on this please, mines standard i think but was looking for a few simple mods, can you explain any easy ones on perhaps a link to a how too /??

try searching modified airbox. porting your throttle bodie will help with some hp. 6 branch manifold and a de-cat pipe.
-
Corrado vr6 upper inlet manifold and throttle body and remap will see good gains.

2.9 bigger?
-
Yes, apparently the 2.9 upper inlet manifold and throttle body is better than the 2.8.

As yours is obd1 as said go with the 2.9 inlet manifold and manifold, enclosed induction kit like a CDA or modified airbox, 6 branch manifold, decat/sports cat and either 2.25/2.5 stainless exhaust.
Top that little lot off with a remmapped chip and you'll be knocking on the door of 200bhp with similar torque.
-
Yeah i was looking at the 6 branch on ebay and the miltek de-cat pipe, the cat on my v6 is huge lol, i reakon ditching the cat will prob car a easy 7 hp wouldn't it ?
-
Decat will not gain that much plus will need to be refitted for the mot.
-
Those 6 branch manifolds on ebay usually make around £125 ? are they any good for that kinda cash ? much hp and sound difference ?

-
Seems to be made at a good standard but would'nt want to say if it was any good. a back to back dyno test would be good with different manifolds to see whats best.
-
I believe from other threads, not a lot of point in changing the manifold.

We built a 2.9 VR6 making 230 BHP (Schrick 268s, Schrick VSR, big valve head, ported TB) that still runs standard cast manifolds and downpipes...so they aren't restrictive.

prob loose some kg making the hp per tonne go up
-

This one is in a stripped track car with composite panels and lexan windows.
I'd hate to think of the power to weight...but it gave my 911 a hard time up to the wrong side of 140 MPH.

lol i wouldnt change mine for the world, and she returns some where around 30 mpg, 35 mpg on a run, very pleased

how do you manage that? my mk2 conversion makes about 20mpg on super unleaded :lipsrsealed:
-
Ive worked it out on the computer and by how much i put in etc, works out over 50 quid ill get 30 mpg, i do a 15 mile run a day on a link road so not really round town as such and i get a good 30 mpg, i took it to bristol and i got 35 mpg... 20's i'd know about it
-
mine hovers around 28mpg, highest ive seen so far is 33 and i have a decat on at the mo.
-
aye and my maf is f**ked, i get 19 - 20 mpg pootling around town - 22 on a run!
Talking about VR6 noise, check this sh!t out, same silencer as me, but damn it sounds wicked from behind!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeNqm9Vx86s
That is a (autotech) Magnaflow 2.5 SS system with the 42dd test pipe and TT downpipe.
(I dont have the TT DP I dont think.....)
-
test pipe = decat pipe ?
-
yep decat pipe
mine still has the resonator on, going for a suitcase delete next but kkeping the resonator for deep burble - straight pipes sound sh!t
I have testpipe (decat) and magnaflow twin 3" silencer. the onloy thing this dude has done diff is the TT DP and the suitcase delete (which i found out from Pm)
sounds absof**kinlutely wicked and awsome doesnt it? mmmmmmmmm
check it back to back with the sound of a porker 911 (997) and tell me its not pure sex on a stick...

That's not a 997. It's a 996...with the optional factory fitted sports exhaust. (Porsche Sports Exhaust - PSE)
Mine had it...sounds great.
