Title: Gearbox help.
Post by: weazgti on 25 February 2010, 16:51
Just popped over from the mk2 section for some mk1 advice for a mates mk1 16v. He text earlier to ask bout his gearbox because he cant put it in gear.Apparently its stiff going in gear and the arm on the box is right up,adjusting the clutch cable makes the clutch non existant and gears are lost.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd start by removing the green end cap and checkign the condition of the release finger, then pull out the release bearign and pushrod and check those too, a magnet helps to pull the pushrod out  If that looks fine then could be either fecked clutch, or the release plate is punctured.  Oh, and check the bulkhead where the cable comes thru, MK1 golf likes to chop itself in half via the clutch cable!  GSF sell a repair plate, its dead easy to fit literally just glue it to the bulkhead!

broke links on release arm, bearing and pushrod length etc:

they also like to cut into the gearbox support bracket, the mk2 had a metal arm added to the box which stops this from happening.
