Hi, I'm new here but I've had a Golf for a couple of years now. The thing is, lately the car has been running really badly when it is hot. I have taken it to a local garage who say there is no diagnostic port and a good friend has had a look too. My mate knows a bit (he runs 300hp rally cars and builds specials) and he can't find a port either. He doesn't know much about Golfs though, his last one was a Mk2 more than 10 years ago. The car runs OK when cold but when up to temp. it splutters and loses nearly all power. If I put my foot to the floor it clears after a while but still seems under powered and the problem comes back almost straight away. My friend has checked the AFM, the compression and plugs leads etc. He thinks it may be a faulty sensor or broken wire.
What do you guys think? About the car that is!
Cheers Lauren.X

temp sensor?

What Golf is it?
Er, it's a mk3. That's why I asked here!
-
temp sensor?
My friend did mention the temp sensor! Where is the temp sensor for the ecu? Do you know how to test it?
-
Think he means like model, gti vr6 etc etc
But have a search and i garantee there will be some answers in there, most common fixes are throttle body clean, change ecu temp sensor, change ecu and/or fuel pump relay

Aha! It's a black one!
NO NO I mean it's a 8v GTI. Did they make other ones?
-
Yeah they made the best one, a vr6

The diagnostic port is next the the ashtray!

What year is the car?
If it's an early car, remove the small plastic blanks next to the switch for the heated rear screen, you'll find the diagnostic port here.
If it's a later car, remove the ashtray, then the plastic cover above the cigarette lighter will slide to the right hand side to reveal the diagnostic port

That's what we thought, but no, not on my car it's not.

Ah, is there? Didn't know about the heated rear screen port! My friend is off to have a look there right now, fingers crossed!

OMG he's found it.   A two pin port behind the switch blank! The next question is, what software, leads etc does my friend need to connect to the port. My friend has a VW manual that has some info and he is going to look for it, but as I have said, VW's are not his thing these days. He does keep muttering about G60's though!!!
