I've just bought a 1995 mk3 GTI (Pre '96 Spec) I had it up on the ramp yesterday relacing exhaust sections and was having a quick look under it and noticed that in the front bumper there are fog lights fitted but I cant get them to work. There is no button for the fog lights on the center console next to the electric windows buttons, the only switch I am aware of is on the main lights switch which only puts the rear fog light on when pulled out.
Am i being stupid?

maybe some GTi models were not fitted with fog lights, and are just blanking plates like the lesser powered non GTi versions?
Sorry for asking the obvious, but do you have wires coming out of where the fog lights are?...
Just a stab in the dark guess!
-
Yes there are lights and wires which is what has confused me.
Where should the switch for the front fog lights be?
-
I dont own a gti as such, only a 1.4, so its the blind leading the blind here
check below the heater controls for a push switch there (ah you already have! :embarassed:), or on one of the indicator/washer stalks.... my car only has blanking plates where the fogs go, on better equipped models! I thought thats where they usually put them? (near the rear window defroster)

my gti front fogs work via pulling the (lights switch out once,) by pulling the switch out twice the rear fogs come on. They only come on if you have your light on aswell tho... side lights at a minimum anyway.
:afro:

I'll have look cheers.
I have found this post with regards to fitting new fog lights:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=145407.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=145407.0)
On there it mentions about Headlight Switch With Front Fogs (This should have a double pull) as far as I am aware mine does not double pull. Is it easy to replace the switch and how can I check if I do replace the "Headlight Switch With Front Fogs" switch will they work, dont want to spend out money if Im wasting my time.
-
does your dash have 2 fog light lamps??? if not then its standard to have just the rear on your model.
I suspect it was fitted with them front fogs but without the correct switch at some point.
you will have the standard switch that only fogs the rear. via a single pull..... you need the double pull switch for the fronts.
Get yourself to a scrappy and get a double switch one
-
Cheers for the info
No there is only 1 fog light lamp, I think your right somone has added on it later but not replaced the switch on the dash. Should I be able to trace the loom from the front fogs to the inside of the car to check?? and how easy is it to remove the switch?? Can I tell by removing the existing switch that there is the front fog facility??
-
I'm not 100% sure but if you pull the whole switch housing, it comes out... think it slots in on clips??? not 100% tho..
-
If they are factory spec fog lamps which are in the front bumper next to the number plate then you need a 2 postion switch, are they wired in.

I googled information on 95 GTI fog lights and this post came up. I was wondering cgorms, if you figured it out because I just bought a 1995 GTI VR6 and the same problem has given me troubles.
