Hi All
A friend of mine's toying with a VW Scirocco. Must admit I don't know which engine/spec yet but it'll be a DSG box and probably a fairly meaty petrol engine, as opposed to the 1.4TFSI or a deisel.
I really think he should go for the MkVI GTi. As a MkV Ed30 owner myself, I just think you get so much more for your hard-earned out of a Golf than you do out of a Scirocco.
It's so much more practical (:nerd:), I appreciate the figures for a Scirocco might be slighlty better for the same engine than in a GTi, but in the real world who'd notice.
If he's insistent, any thoughts on which engine? He's a consultant surgeon so money's not exactly an object!
Martin
PS - appreciate this is a GTi forum so voting / opinion is bound to be slightly skewed
-
tell him to test drive both. the decision making will be made much easier  golf ftw
-
If he wants a 3door may as well get Scirocco if he needs a 5door get a GTI.
Gizzy

Pointless exercise putting it on here................
Both are great cars if he doesn't need an occasional 4/5 seater then scirocco all the way
2.0tfsi or 170 derv gt
Lee Evans
VW Cheltenham
-
Lee I have had both and I would say the Golf is a better car irrespective of the number of people you want to carry. The Scirocco looks great, a real head turner but suffers from torque and understeer, is not as well built as the Golf and just isn't the complete car that the Golf is. The Golf is a better car in my opinion.

OWN UP!!!! WHO ACCIDENTLY PRESSED THE SCIROCCO BUTTON?!?!?!!?
-
About 4 months ago I would have said the Scirocco... but the more I see them, the less I like them!
It depends what he wants it for...
Golf has more room in the back, and extra seat, and a bigger boot.
Thats why I went for the Golf over the Scirocco - oh yeah, and the 4wd
-
Like Gossa, I have owned a Scirocco, and agree with his comments. The interior is the mk5 (Eos..) interior with a few tweeks, but not as nice as a Golf mk6. HOWEVER at £2k cheaper, that could sway you towards a 'Roc. It is no where near as practical as a Golf however, so it would come down to a test drive i would suggest.. Both are great cars
-
Scrirocco is built in a PIGS country!
Golf is built in Germany.
We might eat a pig, but wiil we drive one?
Golf is better built.
Ta ta.
The end.
-
OWN UP!!!! WHO ACCIDENTLY PRESSED THE SCIROCCO BUTTON?!?!?!!?
There's been 3 of them so far, I bet all mk5 GTI owners

Cheeky

I did, for the reason i don't want any more hold ups with production
-

^^^^ You have no idea how true that comment is.
If you're talking only GTI/'Rocco R/Golf R, then I think the best of the three is a 5-dr GTI.... but then again I'm biased. Try the same question on a 'Rocco or an R forum, though... :lipsrsealed:
3-Dr, or for those who like to show off = Scirocco
5-Dr, or for those who are more discerning = Golf
-
When I first saw a scirocco, I thought it was jaw dropping and very unique.
I was really tempted to get one even although I needed a 5 seater and 5 doors.
Went and had a closer look and wasn't that impressed to be honest. It just didn't feel right.
Now when I see them I think they just look like deformed Golfs.
-
To me the Scirocco looks great at certain angles, but from some angles it just looks weird. I considered buying one last year before the GTI came out. It has a very exciting look but I'm not sure if I'd still like the look in a year or two. Tbh I don't think the design will age very well and about a year later after release I don't like it as much as I did initially. Also the interior doesn't fit the exterior at all. VW seemed to have ran out of time when they made the interior. It looks like two different cars and due to the interior it doesn't feel special when you're inside. VW should have brought the same design style to the inside. It felt unfinished to me compared to my mothers Cooper S. Now that's a car that follows the design style both inside and out. I prefer the look of a 3-door GTI but my next car will most likely be a more practical 5-door depending on the family situation.

Is it just me, or is the 'Rocco particularly colour-sensitive?
I think black, blue and white are luuuuvvvly, but the others are poo.
-
I was tempted to buy a scirroco due to its price and sharper driving experience. I decide to spend the extra £ for the Golf cause it looks better and easier to park!
-

I think similar although the black to me makes it look like one of those Pumas or Tigras and does nothing for me.
The white and blue make it look ok though.
-
I'd agree on the best colours being blue or white. I'd still pick the Golf though. If the OP's mate does get a Scirocco though, it needs to be this one:

Having test driven both. Went for the Golf with no regrets at all.
-
(1) The Scirocco has a backside like that of an overdressed Victorian woman.
(2) It has the worst forward visibility of any car due to the exceedingly thick 'A' pillars.
(3) It is really dingy in the back.
(4) The rear passengers have to crouch like hunchbacks.
(5) The 'R' version has an unsightly clip-on sill.
(6) It has very little interior storage space.
(7) Its dashboard does not look fresh (from the Eos).
(8) It has small boot space and a big arse!
(9) It is noisier than a Golf.
(10) Its rear visibility is very poor so can be difficult to park.
(11) Door mirrors very small and not very helpful.
(12) It is made in a PIGS country and not in Germany, hence quality is not quite as good.
(13) It is a good second car.
The list goes on and on ........
Stop comparing chalk and cheese.
PS: p3asa: I have added another two just for you!

How many times have you edited this post?
Every time I have logged on, this post has been highlighted as having a new message and every time it has just been an edit!!! Must be at least 4, 5 or 6 times.
And you have the cheek to slag James Gould about being indecisive

Stop stalking me, you monster.
I have never slagged James. I find him extremely interesting and miss him terribly at present.
I have edited this post just to improve the syntax. I had a problem with the smiley's appearing when unwanted. The 11 points have remained the same.

I'd go along with that, that's a good looking motor.
However, after considering your friends predicament for not very long if the truth be told, leave it to him, he seems more than qualified to make his own mind up.
BTW, where is a 'PIGS' country?

I too wanted to get a Scirocco in the beginning.
Then I drove one. Not bad I thought except those thick 'A' pillars would provide me with the perfect foil to have a super accident in London traffic. Could not see much out of the door mirrors either. My poor passanger, who sat in the back, ended up without one that was functioning properly after a half hour test drive. The poor chap looked quite crippled and in pain.
Nice looking car, shame about the inside.
Beauty is only skin deep.
Just like Jordon, well sort of!
-
if it wasn't for my two sprogs, i'd have a rocco R, but as it is, its just not practical enough, what do i replace my bluefinned ed30 with? sorry a bit off topic, just love the look of the scirocco

The Scirocco would have put an end to that ... just like very tight jeans!
A vasectomy on wheels, literally!
