Hi
Feel sorry for you.
How long did it last.
Are you getting a whine or do you feel the roughness.
Please take some photos to make a 'How to' for us.
Cheers.

rubbling noise, will try and get pics but you do need a press to get them out i think
-
no press needed, just a large socket 30ish mm and a large hammer, then use a vice to press them in
-
they come out easy enough?
-
yeah, pretty easy
-
ah good, hopefully won't take too long then.

Anything else other than a vice? i need to do my nearside rear. dont know if its the same principle?

I would suggest getting someone to press the bearing. You won't remove the old one with a socket and hammer, unless you are lucky.
You may be able to fit the new one with a vice, but its alot easier with a press.
Also if the mk4 is anything like previous models, you will need a knife edge puller to remove the bearing race from the hub.
Not really a job for a novice.

+1 easier with the correct tools
-
Good job i booked it in the garage instead then lol
-
The best thing to do if you don't have access to a press is remove the hub and take it to a friendly garage with the new bearing kit.
That way you will save a load of cash.

I think the rear beam needs to come out to change the rear bearings :undecided: which is a lot of work on its own

done both my fronts that way  had no problems getting the bearing out. and its just as easy putting the new bearing in using a vice as it is using a press. can do a front bearing in under an hour
the only problem is as you said the inner race needs to be pulled off the hub, or you can grind it back a little and use a chisel to break the race of. taking care not to damage or mark the hub
-
I would say you got lucky removing the old bearings if you were using a hammer and socket.
I've seen bearings that take several ton of pressure to shift, when they gave up it was like a gun going off. Without a press, not a chance.
-
hmm lucky both times Ive tried to change a wheel bearing
you aint got a big enough hammer
-
You haven't come across a really tight bearing yet
-
maybe not, but Id try the hammer first if not successful Id dust of the press
-
Why use a hammer when you have a press?
Much better, and no risk of damage to anything from hitting it with a big hammer
-
because by the time the press is set up and the hub is level I could have knocked it out
-
Ok i'll have to take your word for it, all the bearings i've done, which is quite few now, there's no way they would shift without a press.
I remember one on a Audi 90 which needed 3 tonnes of pressure to shift the old unit
Try doing that with a hammer
-
i dont think you need to do anything to the rear beam. AD Autotechnik rekon about an hours work...
-
Bearing done. no press needed, just hammer and brass drift and punch on both inner and outer race.
The 30mm socket is for the hub nut.
-
How much a bearing set you back got to do both on mine making a loud rubbing noise now. any 1 got part numbers? cheers

so must have been lucky then not using a press :lipsrsealed:

Are mk4's different then?
I've never worked on a mk4, just quoting my experience with other VAG cars.
Have you done any other front bearings except mk4's before?
