Title: mixed news
Post by: James Gould on 23 February 2010, 15:32
Just spoke to the dealer about my wanting to change from 3 to 5 door Gti -  dealer said that it would mean my submitting a new order and that he'd be stuck with my current ordered car  -  I said I thought that I could amend the order at any time before the BW is fixed and he said that that's right but that he'd just checked and the date is now firm  -  are we in week 6 now? The dealer said that the car, as ordered, is due for delivery mid/end March  -  he's a good guy but maybe he didn't want to change the order (which would put the sale to me out from March to the summer) and my wanting to change the order brought forward the fixing of my BW a little bit?? that said, I was told 2 or 3 weeks ago that I could expect the car mid April so mid/end March isn't so strange....
...and just been speaking to a guy with an R (manual)  -  he loves it!

Don't take your dealers word for it. Call VW and ask them if your BW is confirmed.

I'll always help someone when I can, regardless. Now get calling, and if VW say your not confirmed then get back on to your dealer and make the changes you want, they have no right 'saying' you will go back to the end of the queue again. You can add to your order anytime, as long as its not confirmed of course.

Hmmm...

I give up!! I cannot seriously belive that someone could be so indecisive... in fact I have had a theory for some time and have kept it to myself.. no longer can I burden the truth alone.

James Gould is actually a VW employee sent here from the future to test potential (and current) Golf owners stupidity and tolerance levels... as well as their ability to justify loyalty to the VW brand despite being both ripped off and treated like Mercedes owners.

Sorry to break it to you all in this way

Goes to show that James is not just indecisive, but insecure.  What's the betting that Mrs Gould wears the trousers?

In fact, I'm amazed there is a Mrs Gould at all. When the minister asked "Do you take this woman as your wife?" there must have been a 50 page thread on that one! :)

Seriously James:
You can change the options on an alreay ordered or allocated car, but if you cahnge from 3 door to 5 door then it is considered as a new order. This is what I have been told. Your dealer is being quite accurate.

Surely not, its basically a shell swap isnt it ? the car isnt even on the production line so I would have thought you can change what you like.

I can understand the reason behind it if this is why as its tech a different order as the basic cars changed were as everything else is just an option. If you look at how its listed on dialog (VWs ordering system) it would make sence.

Everything seems so confused with James.
I think his dealer has gone ga ga!
Anything for a quiet life, probably.
The Volvo dealer must also be in a sorry state.
Do you think his dealership is both Volvo and VW?
I have a funny feeling that this could be true.

When the body of the vehicle is assembled/welded together it is allocated it's VIN. This, as you all know is the number which appears on your V5's. The body is then painted and held in a very large area. When the manufacturer allocates a build week they usually refer to the build week when the body is sent down the Trim and Final line. This is when all the Trim, drive train, etc is assembled to the body.

So, I would say that James's 3Dr body has already been made and so changing his shell to a 5Dr would indeed mean pushing his build week back!!

I hope this helps.

Really?! I was thinking about adding the sunroof but one of the guys today said don't  -  noise on the motorway, leaks...and I can't remember what else  -  you happy you added it? Getting the 3-dr and I'm thinking that it might be a darker cabin that the more windowed 5-dr  -  still mucking about with the idea of ACC but I just don't think I do the driving which warrants it.

I changed the post as i remembered something.
I added the sunroof because of how dark the cabin is. I wanted more light.
Plus in the summer i have a habit of cracking the window open abit to get fresh air rather than just artificial aircon air and so help the through flow of air in the car. The sunroof from past experience with other cars will help with this.
Title: Re: mixed news

but no noise issues, leaks etc?  -  any negatives?
Title: Re: mixed news
Post by: Snoopy on 24 February 2010, 18:17
Leaks yes, had many old cars (bangers) with glass sunroofs when 15 years old plus they can start to delaminate and leak but then again so can windscreens. I still look after a few of my old cars and/or families past cars that are around 10 to 15 years old now and there sunroofs do not leak.
My steel one on the mk1 does not leak and has just been regular greased over the years nothing more and is now 26 years old and works like new.
Noise its a window at the end of the day cars have lots of windows.
Other problems i guess can strech cables if not looked after so not close properly but yu can say that about any car side window too.
They reduce headroom in the front and rear.

James:
See how much I care!
(1) If you get a sunroof, then you will be undecided whether to keep it shut with the blind pulled, shut with the blind not pulled, open, tilted or any other combination you will try and obtain. You will then start a new thread and drive us nuts.
(2) If you get ACC, then you can choose between normal, sport and comfort. I think this will be a more tolerable option for you as there are only 3 things to choose from.
(3) With a sunroof, you will get some wind noise at motorway speeds, so you will have to pull the blind. However, as you will only be driving mainly on country roads, you don't need ACC which is wonderful on motorways and on rough urban tarmac. As you also seem to be a sedate country driver, ACC 'sport' mode will be wasted on you. A sunroof would be more suitable for your purposes.
(4) Most important. Don't get a 5 door as you will be undecided how many times and which doors you might need to open and close. The 3 door will simplify your dilemma.

So get a 3 door, don't get ACC, get a sunroof (mainly useless but I like them) and be happy!
Title: Re: mixed news
Post by: smiffy555 on 25 February 2010, 08:44
I have a sunroof, and to be honest I only use the tilt function.

The GTi, as you all know, has the black roof lining, and so having the blind open occasionaly makes a refreshing change.

With the blind open and the roof shut, at motorway speeds you do get added wind noise. Close the blind and all is quiet.

No water leaks at all.

Headroom is fine as the Golf has a high roof line anyway so no probs there.

With the roof fully open it does suffer from high/low pressure imbalance at speeds above 50mph. If you just drop a side window slightly then the pressures are equalised!!

Would I spec another one, yes.
