my 96'gti failed m.o.t on loose steering, felt like steering wheel is loose but its not, ive inspected down to the nuckle joint in foot well and seems further on, any ideas? :undecided:

Play in the rack maybe.
-
MOT tester should of said if the play was in the rack, which it sounds like it is.

check the bolt that holds the ign lock housing to the outer column tube. take lower ign lock trim off and you'll see it. likely its a shear bolt on a MK3 tho, earlier dubs have an allen bolt. mole grips should do to get it tight enough if it is loose.
-
is there a nylon bush in the top half of the steering colomn? as there is play with the shaft inside the tube.

Theres a nylon bush butted in the bottom of the column tube.Though if this is shot you should be able to move the column as it goes though the bush into the column tube.
